Location: Powys (location varies according to service needs and agreement from worker).

Hours: Bank Work, 24/7 Service – Flexible & Variable.

Salary: £12.71 basic + £1.24 annual leave accrual (2026/27).

Based at: Powys, Brecon, Newtown, Aberystwyth.

Role Purpose

The role of an Appropriate Adult is to support, advise and assist a vulnerable person who has been arrested and is experiencing police interviews and other formal police procedures in custody. The role is active: you will advise and support the detainee through the processes, ensure the person is treated fairly by the police, uphold the person’s rights and entitlements, and facilitate communication between the person and the police so that they understand what is happening. Full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support to detainees during police interviews and custody procedures.
  • Advise detainees on their rights and entitlements.
  • Ensure fair treatment by police and maintain the integrity of the process.
  • Facilitate communication between detainees and police staff.
  • Travel to custody suites, police stations, and occasionally local stations as required.
  • Work flexible hours to cover evenings, overnight shifts, weekends and unsociable hours.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience in a similar support or advocacy role.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • A flexible schedule including evenings, nights and weekends.
