Toolmaker

You will be responsible for maximising the productivity of the department by ensuring that all tooling is maintained and repaired to the highest standards, both mechanically and electrically.

Responsibilities

• Carrying out tool checks in accordance with the plan, ensuring the tool is on the correct inserts, date stamps and to a good production standard such as cavity finish and addressing any issues from storage.
• Covering press breakdowns highlighted on Mattec to minimise machine downtime, including repairs or replacements of parts to get the tool to a runnable state and produce quality-approved parts.
• Performing insert changes, which may occur prior to tool installation or in the press, including removing cores, shells and inserts to create parts such as socket/spigot assemblies.
• Tool servicing including full strip down and rebuild, checking for worn parts, repairing or replacing as required and reviewing last-off samples for defects.
• Red tag log tools with issues for review and repair where possible.
• Manufacturing new parts such as angle pins, core pins, milling a locking block or other small tooling components.
• Assessing a tool and moulded or extruded fittings to determine what work is required to improve it if the part does not meet quality standards.
• Date and engraving pad changes.
• Changing damaged or faulty hot runner parts and rebuilding as necessary.
• Water test tooling, checking hydraulics and repairing cylinder seals if parts are unavailable, coordinating with M&P as needed.
• Strip, repair, polish, machine and rebuild extrusion tooling to the required production standard.
• Operate conventional machines (lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, band saws) and perform bench work and hand grinding as required.
• Measure and inspect parts and read engineering drawings.
• Possess metallurgical skills and knowledge of strength of materials.
• Experience of preventative maintenance on production tooling.
• Familiar with close tolerances using a micrometre, dial test indicators, height gauges, bore micrometre and gauges.
• Plan and lay out a variety of machine and bench operations related to construction, alteration, fitting, assembly, installation, maintenance and repair of tooling, jigs, fixtures, moulds, parts, gauges and related equipment.
• Work from sample pieces, rough sketches, drawings or verbal instructions to plan work.
• Ability to work on in-situ injection moulds or extrusion tooling.

Qualifications

• Apprentice-trained toolmaker.
