Job Title: Shift Manager – Chemical Manufacturing Location: Norfolk Shift Pattern: 4 on 4 off shifts Reports to: Plant Manager / Operations Manager About the Role We are looking for an experienced Shift Manager to take overall responsibility for plant operations during shift hours at our highly regulated chemical manufacturing facility. You will lead all aspects of production, site safety, and compliance, ensuring that targets are met without compromising health, safety, or environmental standards. This is a visible, hands-on leadership role, requiring decisive management of production teams, site activities, and emergency situations if they arise. Key Responsibilities * Lead and manage all site operations during your shift, ensuring production targets are met safely and efficiently. * Provide direct leadership to Production Supervisors and Operators, maintaining a motivated, high-performing workforce. * Act as the Site Incident Controller during any plant emergency, coordinating responses and ensuring effective communication. * Oversee Permits to Work and safe systems of work, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards. * Ensure all work complies with health, safety, environmental, and process safety regulations. * Conduct safety inspections, plant walkdowns, and shift briefings to reinforce safety culture. * Monitor plant performance, troubleshoot issues, and make real-time operational decisions. * Coordinate with maintenance, engineering, and technical teams to prioritise and schedule work without impacting safety or production. * Maintain accurate shift records, incident logs, and ensure thorough shift handovers. * Drive continuous improvement initiatives in safety, efficiency, and reliability. * Mentor and develop shift team members to build capability and succession. Skills & Experience Required * Significant leadership experience in a chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or other highly regulated process industry. * Strong operational and safety leadership skills, with proven experience managing multiple teams on shift. * In-depth understanding of process safety, COMAH regulations (or equivalent), and safe work systems. * Experience managing Permits to Work and overseeing maintenance or contractor activities in a live plant environment. * Confident decision-maker with the ability to lead under pressure. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to influence at all levels. * Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to operational challenges. * Relevant technical qualifications in process operations, chemical engineering, or similar discipline (desirable).
