A leading chemical manufacturing site in Sunderland is seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to join its engineering team. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong mechanical expertise, experience in hazardous environments, and a commitment to high safety and operational standards.
The Role
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing a wide range of mechanical equipment across the site. You'll play a key role in ensuring plant reliability, safety, and efficiency, working both independently and alongside the wider engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning of mechanical plant equipment
- Ensure all work complies with health, safety, environmental, and statutory requirements
- Use CMMS systems to manage, record, and complete maintenance tasks
- Diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions
- Support planned shutdowns, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Work within permit-to-work systems, ensuring proper risk assessments and isolations are in place
- Assist with project work, including installation, commissioning, and handover of new equipment
- Maintain high housekeeping standards and promote a positive safety culture
- Report defects, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly
- Support and mentor colleagues where required
About You
- Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance role within a chemical, process, or heavy industrial environment
- Knowledge of hazardous area working practices (CompEx Mechanical preferred)
- Ideally experience working under COMAH regulations or similar high-hazard industries
- Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation
- Experience using CMMS systems for maintenance planning and reporting
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation
- Proactive, flexible, and able to respond to breakdowns and operational needs
