Shillito Group are recruiting for a Crane and Forge Operative to join a well-established heavy engineering business in Sheffield. This is a strong opportunity for someone with crane, slinging, despatch or material handling experience who wants to build a proper long-term career. You will be working across the forge and heat treatment departments, moving large materials safely, supporting despatch operations and helping keep production running smoothly. As you build your experience, there will be opportunities to develop your skills across crane operations, heat treatment, forging and other areas of the wider manufacturing operation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operating overhead cab cranes
- Operating pendant and remote-controlled cranes
- Carrying out slinging duties
- Loading and unloading material using cranes and forklift trucks
- Completing pre-shift crane checks
- Preparing material for despatch
- Completing despatch paperwork
- Inspecting incoming material
- Recording inspection information for subcontract work
- Updating the internal computer system
- Supporting heat treatment operations
- Maintaining high housekeeping and safety standards
This is not a role where you will be left doing the same task every day. The business is keen to train and develop people who show the right attitude, giving you the chance to take on more responsibility and progress into more skilled work over time.
About you
You will ideally have experience in one or more of the following:
- Overhead or pendant crane operation would be desirable
- Slinging and lifting
- Forklift truck operation
- Despatch or material handling

You do not need to tick every box, but you will need to be reliable, safety-conscious and willing to learn. Good timekeeping, attention to detail and pride in your work are important. You will also need to be comfortable working as part of a team and following strict safety procedures.
