Assistant Director of Education Improvement & Outcomes – London Borough of Newham (Interim Assignment)

Location: Hybrid | Dockside, Newham (Office-based Monday & Wednesday)

Contract: Initial 3‐month contract

Pay: £575 per day (Umbrella) • Hours: 36 per week (Monday-Friday)

Lead the Future of Education in Newham. Newham Council is seeking an outstanding and strategic Assistant Director of Education Improvement & Outcomes to help shape and elevate the borough's education landscape. Working alongside the Director of Education & Inclusion, this is a pivotal leadership role that will drive excellence, strengthen partnerships, and deliver high-impact improvement across all schools and settings.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & School Improvement: Lead the development of Newham's school effectiveness and quality assurance strategy.
  • Build and maintain powerful, collaborative relationships with schools, settings, and local/regional partners.
  • Establish clear, system-wide support structures for school leaders, encouraging innovation and excellence.
  • Develop and grow robust school improvement capacity, ensuring the equitable allocation of resources.
  • Oversee enrichment programmes that empower schools and expand opportunities for children and youth across Newham.

Data, Safeguarding & Performance:

  • Champion a borough-wide, evidence-driven approach through high-quality data systems.
  • Lead frameworks that give a holistic view of attainment, progress, and priority cohorts.
  • Provide oversight of safeguarding reviews, audits, training, and partnerships – including engagement with Ofsted on complaints and Section 11.
  • Maintain close working relationships with school leaders to ensure readiness for the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework and sustained improvement.

Essential Experience (Must-Have)

  • Significant, recent senior leadership experience within a school or education setting – minimum at Deputy Headteacher level.
  • Experience leading the development of a local, system-wide school improvement and/or quality assurance framework.
  • A strong track record of strategic planning, commissioning, and delivering performance frameworks within multi-disciplinary and partnership-based environments.

Essential Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Clear evidence of ongoing, high-quality professional development and a commitment to continued learning.

Desirable

  • Formal school or system leadership qualifications, such as NPQH or equivalent.
  • Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, accountability measures, and school improvement best practice.
  • High-level understanding of education performance data and its use to drive improvement.
  • Experience fostering powerful school-to-school support and collaborative leadership structures.
  • Up-to-date understanding of the lived experiences of education leaders and staff—and how to empower them.

(Desirable) Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities currently facing London schools and local authority education services.
