Surrey Police are looking for experienced Criminal Investigators to work within the North Surrey Police based at Staines. Candidates must be PIP 1 and available to start in the position as soon as the required clearances are completed and authorised.

Working Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week, between the hours of 8am and 5pm. You will be based at Staines Police Station with a salary of £17.70 per hour.

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO POLICE VETTING CRITERIA YOU MUST HAVE RESIDED WITHIN THE UK CONTINUOUSLY FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

Responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking necessary enquiries including statement taking, exhibit handling, witness and victim contact, and prisoner processing through interview and file preparation and submission.
  • Preparing court files for early first hearings (expedited files) and early administrative hearings (remand files), and internal files for offenders suitable for out of court disposal.
  • Identifying and planning own investigative actions at PIP 1 level, considering resources, priorities, and proportionality to pursue all reasonable lines of enquiry.
  • Interviewing witnesses and suspects, applying appropriate interviewing principles and techniques to gather required information, intelligence, and evidence.
  • Ensuring concise and accurate statements are recorded, meeting evidential quality standards and complying with guidelines laid down by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
  • Completing risk assessments and providing appropriate support for victims during investigations, formulating victim plans where required.
  • Liaising and working with other investigators and managers to establish methods for gathering material and developing procedures to turn material into intelligence or evidence.
  • Carrying out analysis, assessing evidence, and evaluating material generated by investigations to identify offenders.
  • Ensuring all material, including exhibits, are seized, examined, and retained in accordance with disclosure and applicable legislation and policy.
  • Responding to safeguarding concerns and managing risk in cases involving vulnerable individuals.
  • Preparing reports on investigation outcomes, building and managing case files, and conducting disclosures within best practice procedures.
  • Attending court as OIC for PIP 1 investigations and giving evidence related to investigations.
  • Assisting with searches following arrests and seizing evidential property or items as appropriate.
  • Providing high-quality victim and witness contact in accordance with the Victims' Code.

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Proven experience in investigation matters and conducting victim, witness, and suspect interviews to a high standard.
  • A working knowledge or willingness to obtain knowledge of criminal law and the criminal justice system.
  • The ability to communicate professionally and empathetically, being alert to inappropriate language and willing to challenge such behaviour.
  • The ability to operate a computer database system and/or willingness to undertake training in Surrey Police systems.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and workloads, prioritising effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Providing detailed updates and situational reports for supervisors.
  • Communicating with various departments across the force to articulate needs for investigations.
  • A methodical approach to work.
  • A full and valid driving licence for motor cars.
