Description
Purpose of the Role: Act as the Council's specialist Structural Engineer, supporting Building Control by ensuring building designs and construction comply with Building Regulations and structural safety requirements. The role provides expert technical advice, assesses structural proposals, supports enforcement activities, and responds to dangerous structures and emergency situations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and assess structural designs, calculations, and specifications for compliance with Building Regulations, British Standards, and Eurocodes.
- Undertake site inspections, particularly for complex structural works.
- Identify structural risks, defects, and non-compliance, recommending corrective actions.
- Support Building Control functions including plan checking, enforcement, and regulatory decisions.
- Investigate dangerous structures following incidents such as fire, impact, or collapse.
- Participate in emergency and out-of-hours response arrangements.
- Provide specialist advice to internal teams, developers, consultants, contractors, and regulators.
- Prepare technical reports, structural surveys, and maintain accurate records.
- Mentor colleagues and contribute to service improvements and policy development.
Essential Requirements:
- Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer status and membership of a professional body such as IStructE or ICE.
- Strong knowledge of structural engineering, Building Regulations, Building Act 1984, relevant standards, and construction materials.
- Experience in structural design, appraisal, assessment, plan checking, inspections, or regulatory compliance activities.
Desirable Experience:
- Dangerous structures and emergency response work.
- Building Control environment experience.
