Software Engineer - Python / Front End

Location: Bristol - 2 days per week in the office

£50,000 - £70,000

The Opportunity

We're working with an innovative, technology-led organisation that is building sophisticated software platforms at the intersection of software engineering, data science, analytics and risk.

They are looking for a Software Engineer with around 2-3 years' professional experience to join a highly skilled and collaborative engineering team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a developer who is strongest on the backend but enjoys working across the stack and wants to broaden their technical skill set.

You'll primarily work with Python and FastAPI, developing APIs and data-intensive backend services, while also contributing to modern frontend applications and user-facing features.

You'll work closely with experienced engineers, data scientists and subject-matter experts to build products that solve complex, real-world problems.

What You'll Be Doing

• Developing and maintaining backend services using Python and FastAPI
• Designing and building robust REST APIs
• Contributing to frontend applications using TypeScript
• Integrating frontend applications with backend services and data sources
• Building interactive dashboards, charts and data visualisations
• Working with PostgreSQL and ORM technologies such as SQLAlchemy
• Developing reliable, scalable and high-performance applications
• Working with cloud-native technologies, particularly Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• Contributing to automated testing, CI/CD and code review processes
• Writing clean, maintainable and well-documented code
• Collaborating with engineers, data scientists and other technical specialists
• Helping integrate analytical and data-driven capabilities into production software

What We're Looking For

You’ll ideally have:

• 2-3 years' professional software engineering experience
• Strong commercial experience with Python
• Experience with FastAPI or a similar modern Python web framework
• Some experience with TypeScript and frontend development
• Good understanding of REST APIs and frontend/backend integration
• Experience working with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL
• Experience working within a cloud environment - GCP would be particularly beneficial
• Good understanding of Git, automated testing, CI/CD and clean coding practices
• Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in working with data-intensive applications
• A collaborative approach and good communication skills

Desirable Experience

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

• Angular, React or Vue
• Chart.js, D3.js or other data visualisation tools
• Databricks, Apache Spark or distributed data processing
• Docker, Kubernetes or Cloud Run
• Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code technologies
• GPU or accelerated computing technologies such as CUDA, CuPy or Numba
• Numerical or high-performance computing
• Insurance, finance, risk, analytics or other data-intensive environments
