We are looking for an ambitious and detail-focused Assistant Management Accountant to join our growing finance team. This role is ideally suited to someone with a strong academic background and around two years’ experience in a purchase ledger, finance assistant or similar accounting role. The successful candidate will take ownership of the purchase ledger function while developing broader month-end, reconciliation and management accounting skills. The role will be split between end-to-end purchase ledger ownership and wider finance support, making it an excellent opportunity for a high-calibre early-career accountant who wants to progress into a more rounded management accounting role.
Responsibilities
- Purchase Ledger Ownership
- Take ownership of the end-to-end purchase ledger process.
- Process supplier invoices accurately and efficiently, including high-volume invoice processing.
- Match invoices to purchase orders and delivery notes, investigating discrepancies where required.
- Manage supplier queries professionally and follow issues through to resolution.
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve differences in a timely manner.
- Maintain supplier master data with strong attention to detail and control.
- Prepare and process supplier payment runs in line with internal approval procedures.
- Maintain strong financial controls and support improvements to purchase ledger processes.
- Month-End and Wider Finance Support
- Support purchase ledger month-end close activities.
- Assist with GRNI reviews and accruals.
- Review aged creditor balances and follow up on outstanding items.
- Support balance sheet and control account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end journals, schedules and supporting analysis.
- Provide information and analysis to support the wider finance team.
- Support ad hoc finance tasks, reporting and process improvement projects as required.
Requirements
- The ideal candidate will be bright, numerate and academically strong, with approximately two years’ practical experience in finance.
- They will already understand the importance of accurate processing, reconciliations and controls, but will be looking for a role that gives them more exposure to month-end activity and the opportunity to build a long-term accounting career.

- Strong academic background, with good A-Level results, equivalent qualifications or a relevant degree.
- Around two years’ experience in a purchase ledger, finance assistant, assistant accountant or similar finance role.
- AAT qualified, studying towards AAT, or committed to continuing professional development in accounting and finance.
- Strong numeracy skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Confident Excel and Microsoft Office user, including Pivot Tables, lookups and basic formulae.
- Self-starter who is comfortable taking ownership of tasks and following issues through to completion.
- Confident communicator, able to work effectively with suppliers and internal departments.
- Comfortable working in a fully office-based role.
- Exposure to month-end processes, accruals, GRNI or balance sheet reconciliations.
- ERP or accounting system experience, ideally Sage.
- Experience in a manufacturing, engineering or high-volume transactional environment.
- Ambition to progress into a broader management accounting role over time.
Working Hours
The working hours for this position are 37.5 hours per week, from 8am to 4:30pm, Monday to Thursday and 8am to 1:30pm on Friday. The business is closed for Bank Holidays, and we also enjoy a shutdown every Christmas until after the New Year.
