ADAS, part of the RSK Group, is seeking a GIS / Cartographic Consultant on a full-time permanent basis into the Modelling, Software & Geospatial Science team to contribute to the delivery of GIS services. The successful applicant will engage in a variety of projects related to agriculture and the environment, serving both internal and external clients.
Responsibilities may include:
- Digital map production
- Management and analysis of spatial data
- Collection and processing of large datasets to produce high-quality outputs for a diverse range of services
This is a hybrid home and office-based role located in Bristol or Wolverhampton. The split between home and office working is flexible.
The successful candidate will primarily operate within the Modelling, Software and Geospatial Science Group, while also collaborating with colleagues specialising in crop physiology, crop protection, soil science, policy and economics, sustainable food and farming, and environmental sciences at ADAS. You will also work with other teams across our parent organisation, RSK.

Key Responsibilities:
- Produce high-quality cartographic outputs
- Carry out geospatial analysis
- Collect and manage geographic data
- Deliver spatial database management and analyses in support of environmental consultancy
- Research to develop new environmental datasets through analysis and aggregation of existing datasets
- Deliver, monitor and manage relevant aspects of the project work undertaken, initially under supervision
- Contribute to the writing of clear reports for clients
- Attend relevant conferences and deliver presentations relating to key projects
- Proactively develop a comprehensive knowledge relating to land management and its impacts on the environment by reading scientific papers and reports
- Participate in meetings with government and commercial clients to gain a better understanding of client requirements and the process of business and project development
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Degree in a numerate scientific discipline, ideally a geographical science
- Competent user of GIS software (ideally ESRI or QGIS) to visualise data and produce maps, and a desire to develop your skills further
- Production of high-quality cartographic output
- Manipulation and quality assurance of large, complex datasets, ideally with automation through scripting
- Use of ArcGIS Online tools (Field Apps and Survey123) for the creation of surveys for digital data capture
- Handling data in multiple formats, coordinate systems, and datum
- Presentation of outputs using contemporary methods to a range of audiences
Desirable:
- Writing or contributing to bids or tenders to commercial or government clients
- Direct interaction with clients as part of sales and project management activities, including face-to-face meetings
- Management of projects for commercial or government clients, with responsibility for managing staff delivery, invoicing and quality assurance
- Understanding of contract management and commercial terms
- Understanding of ecology and the application of GIS in ecological applications
- Application of remote sensing and/or image processing skills
- Using coding (Python or R scripts) in the creation of geospatial tools and workflow efficiencies
- Creation of web mapping solutions using ESRI or open-source technology
- Understanding of agricultural systems in the UK and the role GIS and spatial analysis can play in its management
- Environmental modelling and spatial analysis
