This is a hands-on management role rather than a purely office-based administrative position.
We are looking for an organised, commercially minded and highly proactive Operations & Business Development Manager to join our growing plant hire and haulage business.
This is a key position within the company and will involve responsibility for the day-to-day coordination of our plant hire, haulage and HGV operations, while also supporting the continued growth of the business.
The successful candidate will be responsible for keeping the fleet and operations organised, ensuring compliance and maintenance requirements are scheduled, managing customer bookings and contracts, coordinating invoices and working closely with our maintenance engineer to keep machinery and vehicles operational.
The role will also have a strong business-development element.
We are looking for someone who is confident speaking to existing and potential customers, building relationships, identifying new opportunities and using social media and digital marketing to promote the business.

Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management
- Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the plant hire and haulage business.
- Manage bookings for plant, machinery, low loaders, HIAB/crane services and haulage work.
- Maintain an accurate forward schedule of all bookings and contracts.
- Coordinate deliveries, collections and movements of hired equipment.
- Ensure the correct equipment, vehicle and driver are allocated to each job.
- Communicate job details clearly to drivers, operators, customers and management.
- Monitor ongoing contracts and ensure customer requirements are being met.
- Identify scheduling conflicts and resolve operational problems quickly.
- Maintain good communication between the office, drivers, operators, mechanics and customers.
- HGV Compliance & Fleet Management
- Maintain accurate records for all HGVs, trailers and relevant fleet assets.
- Manage planned maintenance schedules.
- Book servicing, inspections, MOTs and repairs.
- Ensure safety inspections are scheduled and completed on time.
- Monitor vehicle defects and ensure they are dealt with promptly.
- Coordinate repairs between drivers, the maintenance engineer and external suppliers.
- Maintain records of repairs, inspections and maintenance.
- Monitor vehicle compliance and bring upcoming requirements to management's attention.
- Plant & Machinery Management
- Maintain an up-to-date plant and equipment register.
- Schedule servicing and preventative maintenance.
- Monitor hours/mileage and ensure equipment is serviced at the correct intervals.
- Coordinate breakdowns and repairs with the maintenance engineer.
- Arrange external specialist repairs where necessary.
- Monitor equipment availability and downtime.
- Hire & Contract Administration
- Take customer enquiries and convert them into bookings where appropriate.
- Maintain the company's booking diary/system.
- Monitor contract start and end dates.
- Arrange extensions and off-hires.
- Coordinate equipment collections and returns.
- Invoicing & Administration
- Prepare and issue customer invoices promptly.
- Check job sheets, delivery tickets, timesheets and hire records before invoicing.
- Ensure additional charges such as waiting time, overtime, transport, mileage and damage are correctly captured.
- Monitor outstanding invoices and assist with credit control.
- Business Development
A significant part of this role will be helping the company grow.
