The Room Leader is responsible for the day-to-day management of a designated room within the nursery. This includes leading a small team, ensuring high-quality care and education in line with the EYFS, and supporting children's learning, development, safety, and wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Management
- Lead, support, and motivate staff within the room to deliver high-quality practice
- Always act as a role model for best practice
- Support staff with planning, observations, and assessments
- Mentor new or less experienced staff and students
- Communicate effectively with the management team regarding room performance, staffing, and children's needs
- Childcare & Education
- Ensure the EYFS framework is implemented effectively within the room
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate age-appropriate activities based on children's interests and developmental needs
- Monitor children's progress and support individual learning plans
- Provide additional support for children with SEND or EAL, working alongside parents and professionals where required
- Support children's emotional wellbeing and promote positive behaviour
- Safeguarding & Welfare
- Maintain a safe, secure, and stimulating environment at all times
- Adhere to safeguarding, health and safety, and nursery policies and procedures
- Act as a safeguarding lead for the room and report concerns appropriately
- Ensure ratios are maintained and daily checks are completed
- Parent & Carer Partnership
- Build positive, professional relationships with parents and carers
- Act as a key person for a group of children
- Share information about children's development, routines, and progress
- Support families through transitions, including settling in and moving on to school
- Administration & Organisation
- Ensure accurate records are maintained (observations, assessments, registers, accident forms, etc.)
- Support room organisation, resources, and displays
- Attend and contribute to staff meetings, supervisions, and training
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Level 3 qualification or above in Early Years / Childcare
- Sound knowledge of the EYFS framework
- Experience working within a nursery or early years setting
- Previous experience leading a room or team (or strong deputy experience)
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Desirable Criteria
- Level 4 or above qualification in Early Years
- Experience working with SEND and/or EAL children
- Paediatric First Aid (or willingness to complete)
- Experience with Ofsted inspections
- Leadership or management training
