About the Role
This position is based at Acumen Waste Services, part of the Panda Group. Acumen specialises in hazardous waste management and high‑pressure water jetting, and works on waste clearance projects for the Environment Agency. This role requires UK wide travel covering a number of different sites and locations, depending on the projects the business is undertaking.
Key Accountabilities
The SHEQ Manager leads and drives a culture that never compromises on health and safety for employees, contractors, customers, and partners. The role combines hands‑on and strategic activities: developing proactive hazard risk management systems, delivering zero injuries, and promoting a positive safety culture across all sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Work under the direction of the Group SHEQ Manager to achieve business objectives.
- Ensure visible felt leadership on site.
- Conduct daily walks of sites and plants to maintain a SHEQ presence.
- Raise and report Hazards, Incidents and Threats (HITS) and support sites and departments with close‑out.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and facilitate site inspections, building positive relationships with regulators and other interested parties.
- Lead investigations, formulate investigation teams, and track to close‑out.
- Maintain incident reporting data to ensure corrective actions are implemented and records are completed thoroughly and timely.
- Ensure SHEQ procedures and systems are implemented across the business and fully understood to comply with relevant legislation.
- Implement safety policies and programs, including training, processes, and procedures.
- Join and lead weekly site tours, encouraging participation from other departments.
- Monitor and analyse accident and incident trends, and ensure training and controls reduce incidents and drive down risk.
- Develop and implement SHEQ related activities that meet current and future business needs, achieving high levels of health, safety, and environmental performance.
- Ensure all accidents, incidents, near misses and non‑conformities are correctly reported and investigated according to company procedures.
- Maintain accident and incident files, investigations, corrective actions, and other safety records.
- Produce weekly and monthly reports from the health & safety and environment department regarding site performance.
- Promote the organisation’s vision and values to internal and external stakeholders for SHEQ.
- Build relationships with direct line operational leaders and contribute to functional developments ensuring compliance with Group requirements.
- Maintain the business unit’s management systems and document control.
- Review and create necessary SHEQ documents.
- Organise external surveys and assessments, ensuring records of corrective action are maintained.
- Ensure training records for personnel are up to date, both internal and external.
- Manage the contractor control database and maintain all related documents.
- Manage the off‑taker waste destination list and maintain documentation.
- Undertake Core and Comprehensive audits.
- Support the creation of training documents.
- Assist with site PQQ questionnaires and tender SHEQ questions.
- Facilitate and support ISO audits for sites.
Training / Qualifications
- 2+ years’ experience in a similar role with demonstrable experience; other experience will be considered.
- Qualified to NEBOSH General Certificate, with willingness to progress to NEBOSH Diploma.
- Understanding of ISO Standards with auditing experience.
- Experience of managing several sites and demonstrating cohesive policy implementation and proactive business support.
- Experience of developing and implementing meaningful SHEQ KPIs, targeting key improvement areas and celebrating success.
- Experience of dealing with regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and external clients.
- Highly capable communicator, able to deliver messages across all levels and achieve buy‑in.
- Excellent communication and decision‑making skills.
- Self‑motivated and confident with good presenting skills.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Full driving licence.
