Activities Industry Mutual (AIM) is a member-owned insurance mutual established to provide specialist liability and related insurance cover to organisations operating within the outdoor activities and adventure education sector. AIM provides cover to a wide range of activity providers, including outdoor education centres, watersports operators, climbing providers and freelance instructors. AIM is managed by Thomas Miller, an international insurance services provider with a long-established reputation for managing specialist and member-owned insurance mutuals.
Overall Objective of Role
Responsible for the provision of 1st class service to Mutual clients and its members. This includes managing renewals, new business and mid-term adjustments, under the authorities delegated by the supporting insurers for each Mutual. The team is responsible for managing and developing relationships with insurers, brokers and mutual members according to the scope of their role; ensuring that systems and processes support and adhere to underwriting and regulatory requirements. This role may provide technical support for other employees within the business as and when required and within underwriting authority.
Specific Responsibilities
- Dealing with allocated renewals lists (some are automated, and some require individual underwriting process).
- Acting as a technical referral point within the team – taking referrals from other employees on renewals, new business and MTAs.
- Project work - assisting Mutual Manager with reviewing policy wordings, creation of client letters, schedules, review of insurance documents, etc.
- Fulfilment of pricing as required by the Actuarial Department in accordance with the Company’s underwriting guidelines.
- Monitoring the performance of underwriting business and to assist with the provision of reports to the Mutual Manager and other departments as required.
- Ensure that the Company’s underwriting philosophies and procedures are understood and adhered to.
- To ensure accurate and timely decision making on new business and renewal quotations to achieve agreed service standards in conjunction with the appropriate Mutual Manager and Head of Underwriting.
- Coordinating with the Claims department to keep informed of any claims trends/ losses.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate underwriting guidelines.
- May be responsible for technical skills training and ongoing development of front-line employees.
- May be responsible for carrying out quality checking and a structured audit procedure on front-line staff’s underwriting delegated authority.
- Remain vigilant to the potential opportunities for financial crime, fraud and money laundering and take actions appropriate to mitigate their likelihood and impact.

Person Specification
- CII qualifications up to ACII (or equivalent) is preferred.
- Experience of working within an Underwriting or Broker function.
- A sound understanding of Liability and Property Insurance.
- A detailed understanding, and experience of, the commercial property and liability markets.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work with others internally and externally.
- The ability to negotiate and influence results.
- The ability to assess technical risk, apply that knowledge to and make sound decisions within authority level(s).
- The ability to demonstrate the building and maintaining of internal and external relationships.
- The ability to demonstrate meeting and exceeding personal objectives and company-wide targets.
- An awareness of the market and legal/industry developments which could affect the writing of business.
- Proven knowledge and understanding of technical Underwriting, including reserving, earning models, IBNR and their practical application to pricing.
- Highly computer literate with experience of MSO packages.
- Good problem-solving skills and the experience to prioritise work and meet specified deadlines.
