Therapeutic Residential Worker
Salary: £27,000 per annum
Location: Ryton, Tyne & Wear
Contract/Hours: Permanent / Full Time – 37 hours per week - This role follows a flexible shift pattern made up of long days, half‑day shifts and waking nights, with a mix of early and late starts.

A bit about the role
As a Therapeutic Residential Worker, you’ll play a vital role in helping children feel safe, supported and able to grow. You’ll help create stability, build trust and support emotional development through consistent, attuned and relationship‑based care. Your understanding of how past experiences shape behaviour will guide you as you respond with patience, curiosity and empathy.
Working alongside mental health professionals, you’ll help embed therapeutic approaches into everyday routines, strengthening resilience, encouraging positive relationships and promoting healing. You’ll support children through both calm and challenging moments, always prioritising emotional safety and wellbeing.
This is a role that asks for compassion and commitment, offering the chance to make a genuine, lasting difference for children who deserve security, hope and a brighter future. A strong passion for safeguarding children and young people is essential.
About the Service
Brumby House is Action for Children’s residential home in Ryton, providing a safe, stable and nurturing environment for children who can no longer live at home. Our team offers consistent, compassionate care that helps children feel secure, valued and understood. Daily life is centred around building trusting relationships, creating predictable routines and supporting children to develop confidence, resilience and positive coping skills.
We work closely with schools, health professionals and partner agencies to ensure each child receives joined‑up, child‑centred support. Brumby House is a warm, welcoming home where children can explore their interests, celebrate achievements and experience the stability they deserve.
What you do could make a difference
Some key responsibilities of the Therapeutic Residential Worker role are to;
- Offer calm, steady and reassuring support throughout daily routines.
- Use thoughtful, developmentally aware approaches and skilled de‑escalation to navigate difficult moments.
- Encourage independence, confidence and resilience through consistent guidance and positive reinforcement.
- Support young people to explore their interests, hobbies and future goals.
- Help create a safe, nurturing and predictable home environment where children feel valued and secure.

- Experience supporting young people with complex emotional and behavioural needs.
- Confidence in navigating challenging situations with calm, steady decision‑making.
- A therapeutic, reflective approach with strong relationship‑building skills.
- Patience, empathy and the ability to remain composed under pressure.
- A genuine commitment to making a positive, lasting difference in a young person’s life.
- A Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or recognised equivalent), or a willingness to complete this within two years of joining us — with full support provided throughout.
