Across a vast array of drilling riser systems, well abandonment equipment and structures, Claxton delivers pragmatic, safe, reliable solutions to the operating challenges faced by our clients. We have a global team with a singular mission, to make our clients' projects happen.

Claxton is currently looking to hire a Designer or Engineer to join the team on a full-time, permanent basis. Based at our facility in Westhill, Aberdeen the successful candidate will be responsible for developing tooling designs and drawings from concept through to detailed design, manufacture, assembly and testing, calculations and FEAs. The role sits within the engineering team, focusing on developing, enhancing, and sustaining tooling designs in support of a range of energy infrastructure projects, installation and commissioning services associated with offshore wind farms to inspection, repair, maintenance, and decommissioning services across the energy industry.

Work will predominantly be office-based in the Aberdeen area. However, when required local, national, and international travel may be requested at short notice. The employee may also be asked to attend offices and work sites both on and offshore, in support of product and project delivery and operations.

Duties & Main Responsibilities

  • Assess design brief to produce the best design solution to the project requirements, considering timescale, cost, safety, current client, and industry standards.
  • Look for opportunities to integrate products from within the group to achieve said solution and offer external product solutions to complete the project brief.
  • Perform design work to produce required project documentation, drawings, calculations, procedures, reports, etc.
  • Generate functional design specifications and technical specifications for products and projects.
  • Input and manage the design elements of projects, including design output, manufacture, QA, 3rd party verification/validation with respect to the technical, timeframe and commercial considerations.
  • Create designs and perform design verification (FEA, hand calculations) in support of key projects and products.
  • Provide design-related input into kick-off, design review, project planning and other meetings.
  • Perform 3D and 2D design activities and produce machining/fabrication drawings in support of the development, commercialisation and sustaining of products, technologies, and associated systems.
  • Perform design and development, check and review activities in accordance with Claxton's quality management system processes and procedures.
  • Support assembly, commissioning and testing of company equipment onsite and offsite.
  • Contribute conceptual design work and CTX input in support of the composition of proposal documents.
  • Conduct and document design review meetings and closeout actions, and attend client meetings alongside more senior team members as required.
  • Where appropriate, liaise with other team members throughout Claxton and Acteon to gain experience of company product lines and share ideas on how to implement and combine new technology within existing and new products.
  • Offer support and technical guidance to members of the engineering, projects, operations, supply chain, sales, and commercial teams to aid the growth and development of the company.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of design and development processes and procedures for the business unit.
  • Offer direct and indirect mentorship to developing engineers, designers, technicians, interns, and work placement students.
  • Perform any other delegated responsibilities as instructed by line management within the timeframe specified in a safe and efficient manner to meet business requirements.

Required

  • Flexible team player who also functions very well under own initiative, bringing creativity and efficiency to design output.
  • Cross-functional contributor, working with engineering, operations, supply chain and quality functions to ensure design output considers all stakeholders.
  • Ideally with a practical background through work history or hobbies.
  • MEng/BEng/HND Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Design (however, a combination of HNC and relevant experience will be considered).
  • Preferably registration with a recognised professional body (e.g. IMechE, IET).
  • Skilled in the use of 2D and 3D design packages for modelling, drawing, tolerance/GD&T, hydraulic systems, and preparation of models for FEA analysis.
  • Knowledge of machine design elements, strength of materials, and use of Mathcad and FEA principles to perform design verification using first principles.
  • Experience in mechanical tooling design from developing concepts to creating detailed machining and fabrication drawing packs.
  • Knowledge and experience regarding well abandonment and subsea infrastructure decommissioning and associated tooling designs.
  • Knowledge and experience of offshore IRM work scopes and associated mechanical/hydraulic/electro-hydraulic bespoke tooling design for diver and ROV operations.
  • Preferably with knowledge and experience of offshore wind farm installation and commissioning and developing associated tooling.
