Actemium Automation Peterborough is seeking a proactive and technically adept Software Controls Systems Engineer to join our control system software team. The role involves developing, commissioning and supporting control system software integration for industrial automation projects across multiple sectors. You will collaborate with project managers, control system hardware engineers, suppliers and customers to develop, implement and test PLC, HMI and SCADA solutions that meet project requirements, safety standards and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop clear, maintainable and well‑documented control system software (PLC, HMI, SCADA etc) using industry standard platforms (e.g. Allen‑Bradley, Siemens).
  • On‑site commissioning, integration and testing of control systems, in line with safety and site regulations.
  • Create and review control system documentation (e.g. functional design specifications).
  • Lead and participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).
  • Collaborate with multiple departments and team members to ensure projects are delivered on time, in budget and to agreed specifications.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting and remote diagnostics of control system software.
  • Ensure all software and documentation comply with company SHEQ procedures, project specifications and industry best practice.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, standardisation of control libraries, templates and reusable code assets.
  • Coach and mentor junior members of the software team.
  • Attend client meetings and site visits as required, maintaining professional communication and accurate project records.

About You

  • Proven experience in developing and commissioning control system software.
  • Practical knowledge of one or more PLC and SCADA platforms, ideally one being Rockwell Automation control systems.
  • Competent in producing control system documentation.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex software and integration issues.
  • Organised and detail‑focused, able to manage multiple tasks and meet tight project deadlines.
  • Good communicator, comfortable working collaboratively with multi‑disciplined teams, clients and suppliers.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and safe systems of work for industrial control systems.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites and supplier facilities, with a large percentage of the on‑site activities requiring international travel.

Qualifications & Experience

  • HNC/HND, degree or equivalent qualification in electrical, control systems, software engineering or a related discipline, desirable.
  • Experience in control system software development, commissioning and testing.
  • Experience working within SHEQ frameworks and following documented procedures.
  • Manufacturer or platform specific training and certifications, desirable.
