Overview
Actemium Birmingham, part of VINCI Energies UK & ROI, is seeking an experienced HV Commissioning Engineer to support all aspects of High Voltage (HV) commissioning and related engineering services for our clients. The role involves working on HV projects, supporting regional engineering teams with testing, commissioning, maintenance, and fault investigation on a wide range of HV and LV systems. This is a hands-on, technical role requiring strong knowledge of power systems, protection principles, and substation equipment. Training and development opportunities are available, including authorisations and switching. This role is suited to an intermediate-level BMS engineer with proven experience in BMS design, estimating, or panel solutions, looking to develop technically and commercially within a growing business unit. The positions are offered on an opportunistic basis, with final role definition and seniority determined by the experience and strengths of the appointed individuals.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of HV projects, including testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities
- Provide technical support to regional engineering teams across HV and LV networks
- Carry out general testing of substation apparatus including transformers, circuit breakers, and protection systems
- Test and commission protection relays and associated equipment, including:
- Overcurrent and Earth Fault relays
- Self‑powered protective devices and TLFs
- Differential, unit, zone, busbar (Buszone), Duobias and Solkor schemes
- G59 / G99 protection schemes
- Transformer protection (Buchholz, temperature, pressure relief)
- Generator protection and changeover systems
- Transformers (power and distribution)
- Current and Voltage Transformers (CTs/VTs)
- Oil, gas, vacuum and air circuit breakers
- Ring Main Units (RMUs), busbars, HV/LV cables
- Battery tripping units and neutral earthing resistors
Knowledge & Experience Required
- Strong understanding of power systems and protection principles
- Proven experience in HV testing, commissioning, and protection schemes
- Good working knowledge of transformer, generator, and circuit breaker design, construction, and operation
- Previous experience operating as an HV SAP, or working towards SAP authorisation
- Experience with switching operations at 11kV and/or 33kV (desirable; training can be provided)
- Comfortable working autonomously and supporting complex HV projects
- For BMS capabilities (opportunistic / intermediate level)
- Experience working as a BMS Engineer, Designer, or Estimator at an intermediate level
- Able to work with minimal supervision while collaborating closely with project and contracts teams
- Experience with switching operations at 11kV and/or 33kV (desirable, but training can be provided)
Qualifications
- BTEC Level 3 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent – essential
- HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent – desirable but not essential
- AP15 Authorisation (or equivalent) – desirable but not essential
