As a Recovery Worker, you’ll support individuals recovering from addiction while residing in secondary accommodation—such as supported housing or residential recovery houses. You’ll help clients build independence, maintain sobriety, and develop life skills in a safe, structured environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments, develop individualised recovery plans, and support clients with personal goals, coping strategies, and relapse prevention.
  • Facilitate both one-to-one and group work sessions, and coordinate structured treatment programs.
  • Encourage daily participation—support movement toward independent living, education, volunteering, and employment.
  • Help clients manage practical aspects of life such as housing, benefits, finances, and wellbeing.
  • Accompany or assist clients to off-site appointments, group activities, or therapy.
  • Manage admissions and discharges, and ensure clients settle into the household environment.
  • Conduct house meetings, assist with communal upkeep, wellness planning (e.g., meals), and medication support.
  • Carry out risk assessments, maintain care plans, client records, and provide thorough handovers to colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies—such as detox programs, housing providers, healthcare, employment services, probation—to coordinate holistic care.
  • Provide harm reduction advice, including safer use and overdose prevention guidance.
  • Adhere to organisational policies, CQC standards, safeguarding, confidentiality, and duty-of-care obligations.
  • Participate in training, professional development, and team meetings.

Skills & Experience Requirements

  • Minimum: NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent); Level 3 preferable.
  • Additional benefit: Level 3 or Diploma in Addictions, Substance Misuse, or related fields.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, active listening, and non-judgmental approach.
  • Ability to manage complex caseloads, lone working, and stressful situations calmly.
  • Competence in IT literacy—maintaining records, using MS Office, databases.
  • Familiarity with risk management, care planning, and safeguarding practices.
  • Experience delivering structured interventions, facilitating groups, motivational interviewing.
  • Appreciation of holistic care, recovery models (harm reduction and abstinence), and partnership work.
  • Personal lived-experience of recovery or having completed peer support training—sometimes valued by employers.
