Scope: Reporting to the Global Head of Tax, this role is a leadership position within the global tax function, responsible for shaping and executing the Group’s indirect tax strategy across the UK and international operations. You will act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders, driving best-in-class VAT governance, optimizing tax outcomes, and leading transformation initiatives that embed scalable, technology-enabled processes. This role combines deep technical expertise, commercial acumen, and operational leadership in a fast-paced, acquisitive and technology-driven environment.

Indirect Tax Strategy & Advisory

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on VAT, advising on complex and high-value matters including cross-border transactions, new product offerings, recoverability, and business structuring.
  • Provide commercially focused guidance to enable the business while ensuring compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Partner with Legal and Finance to ensure contractual arrangements (including intra-group and customer agreements) are robust.
  • Lead indirect tax consideration of transfer pricing policies and intercompany arrangements.

Global Compliance & Risk Management

  • Oversee VAT compliance across the UK and multiple international jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of the Group’s UK VAT reporting, including calculations of partial exemption methodologies and optimization opportunities.
  • Design, implement, and continuously enhance tax governance frameworks, controls, and documentation, aligned with SAO and global regulatory expectations.
  • Lead responses to tax authority audits and enquiries, maintaining strong relationships with HMRC and international authorities.

Tax Transformation & Process Excellence

  • Drive a best-in-class indirect tax operating model, leveraging automation and technology to improve efficiency, scalability, and control.
  • Lead indirect tax workstreams in ERP (Workday) and tax engine implementations, including design, configuration, and testing.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives that reduce manual processes and enhance data quality and reporting integrity.

M&A and Business Integration

  • Lead indirect tax workstreams in M&A transactions, including due diligence, structuring, and post-acquisition integration.
  • Ensure newly acquired businesses are seamlessly integrated into the Group’s VAT compliance and control environment.

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a strategic partner to other functions, influencing decision-making across Finance, Legal, Treasury, and operational teams.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external advisors, ensuring high-quality and cost-effective support.
  • Provide training and capability-building across the organization to enhance VAT awareness and compliance culture.

Regulatory & Technical Leadership

  • Proactively monitor and interpret legislative changes, case law, and regulatory developments globally.
  • Translate technical developments into clear, actionable insights for senior stakeholders.

Key Skills & Expertise:

  • 8+ years of indirect tax experience, with strong technical depth and proven leadership capability.
  • Experience in financial services and/or insurance sector-specific experience (including Lloyd’s syndicates) within a professional services firm or in-house.
  • Demonstrated expertise in cross-border VAT advisory and international compliance frameworks.
  • Track record of leading tax transformation or automation initiatives, including ERP and tax engine implementations.
  • Strong commercial mindset with the ability to balance risk, compliance, and business enablement.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience engaging senior leadership.
  • High level of attention to detail, with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • ACA / CTA (or equivalent) qualification preferred.
