Acorns Children's Hospice are looking for a Children's Palliative Staff Nurse to join our Birmingham Hospice. Our Staff Nurses are responsible for the assessment of care needs and the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based programmes of care for life-limited and end-of-life children and young people who have a range of complex health needs.
About The Role
Acorns provides care for babies, children and young people, who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Our Staff Nurses are part of a supportive, multidisciplinary team delivering care packages that are tailored to each child's individual holistic needs â and weâre structured so that youâll simply 'have the time to care'. Each hospice is purpose-built with individually decorated rooms overlooking our gardens. We try to make it as welcoming and friendly as possible â a homely environment for the children, young people and their families.
As Childrenâs Palliative Staff Nurse, You Will:
- Be responsible for the assessment, development and evaluation of nursing care for children and young people with complex health needs including life limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families.
- Use your clinical skills including caring for children who require longâterm ventilation, tracheostomy care, oxygen therapy, suction, syringe drivers and enteral feeds. These skills will be gained by completing competencyâbased training.
- Deliver evidence-based end of life and symptom management and afterâdeath care.
- Promote communication with the children and young people, encouraging them to express their wishes and concerns to their best ability (this may include nonâverbal, electronic or alternative communication methods).
- Provide health education information to the child and family, to promote a healthy lifestyle and where appropriate address public health issues.
Weâre open every day of the year and are fully responsive to the needs of our children and young people, so we will ask for some flexibility as there will be day and night shifts.
About You:
- Registered nurse
- Evidence of ongoing CPD relevant to the role
- Demonstrable relevant experience in palliative care
- Experience of working with children with complex health needs
- Tracheostomy care and/or longâterm ventilation skills (or willingness to undertake competency training)
- Oxygen therapy, suction, enteral feeds, etc.
- Catheterisation skills (or willingness to undertake competency training)

You need to be eligible to work in the UK to be considered for this role. We are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and therefore any successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check for children and will be asked to provide two satisfactory references. In addition, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of immunisation against specific diseases or confirm their willingness to receive the necessary vaccinations.
