Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust is seeking a Casual Bank Cook to assist the Lead Cook in ensuring that all catering requirements for our Birmingham Hospice are met and delivered in line with the highest food, safety and hygiene standards, delivering a high-quality service to children, families and all recipients of the service. You'll work occasion shifts, when required, to cover absence.
About the Role
At Acorns Children’s Hospice we offer specialist palliative care and support for children and their families across the West Midlands. We are there wherever and whenever they need us, in the hospice, community and at home. Our aim at Acorns is to help families feel equipped to cope at every stage of their child’s life with dedicated teams offering psychological, emotional and practical support.
As a Bank Cook, you will:
- Prepare and cook a variety of meals, including special diets (e.g. soft, pureed, allergen free, blended)
- Follow the menu plan and work with the care team to ensure that the meals delivered meet the children’s preferences and dietary needs, this may include fortifying foods
- Maintain high standards of food hygiene practices to avoid cross contamination
- Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering supplies, managing wastage in order to save money
- Undertake catering-related cleaning duties
- Serve main meals including preparation of dining areas.
About You
- Previous experience of catering duties including preparation, cooking and serving of food
- Knowledge of nutrition and dietary needs
- Knowledge of food hygiene regulations

You need to be eligible to work in the UK to be considered for this role. We are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and therefore any successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check and will be asked to provide two satisfactory references. In addition, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of immunisation against specific diseases or confirm their willingness to receive the necessary vaccinations.
