Acorn Community Bank has been growing fast, providing affordable finance to around 7000 people and has ambitious growth plans. As part of our governance procedures, the Audit and Risk committee seeks a volunteer to help with internal audit.
Acorn Community Bank serves people to whom High Street banks won’t usually offer loans. That’s about 40% of the population, who are normally served by high‑cost doorstep and payday lenders. The credit union can transform their access to loans at reasonable rates of interest. Your expertise will help us manage our business better and work more effectively with members in financial difficulty. As a result, we will deliver more robust financial services and serve our members better.
What are we looking for?
- You have practical audit experience, which you will use to review, challenge and support the Credit Union’s financial and general management capabilities.
The Credit Union has a Chief Executive who is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the Credit Union, who may turn to you for advice and will be your main point of contact.
What will you be doing?
- Carrying out operations that deliver our agreed policies are critical challenges for any organization. This is especially true of a community bank or credit union, which is regulated by the Bank of England.
- You will be a member of our Audit and Risk Committee. The Board appoints this committee to carry out duties defined in general terms by the Bank of England, to ensure that the Board and Management of the Credit Union meet required financial reporting objectives and establish practices and procedures sufficient to safeguard members’ assets.
- This committee supports the Board to ensure that it operates correctly within the law, current regulations and Acorn Community Bank’s own rules and policies.
- The Committee also carries out audit operations in line with an agreed annual audit plan and the Committee’s Terms of Reference.
- We use an independent specialist internal audit supplier for major audits (like GDPR compliance). The role of the Audit Member of the Supervisory Committee will be to help with smaller, more focused inspections, for example whether our investments are handled according to our policy.
