Swindon Borough Council is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Safeguarding and Support to provide senior leadership across safeguarding services and support functions. The Director of Safeguarding and Support will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of safeguarding practice, governance, and regulatory compliance across children's and adult services. Working closely with the Council's senior leadership team, the Director of Safeguarding and Support will lead service improvement, safeguarding oversight and partnership working to ensure vulnerable children, adults and families receive high-quality protection and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for safeguarding and support services across Swindon Borough Council.
  • Ensure robust safeguarding frameworks are embedded across children's and adult services.
  • Lead and support senior management teams responsible for safeguarding delivery.
  • Oversee quality assurance, audit and improvement programmes to maintain high standards of practice.
  • Strengthen multi-agency partnerships with health, police, education and voluntary sector organisations.
  • Ensure services operate in line with statutory safeguarding legislation and national guidance.
  • Drive service transformation and improvement initiatives to enhance outcomes for vulnerable residents.
  • Provide expert safeguarding advice to senior leaders, elected members and governance boards.
  • Lead learning and improvement following safeguarding reviews and audits.

Essential Requirements

  • Significant senior leadership experience within safeguarding services.
  • Extensive knowledge of children's and/or adult safeguarding legislation and frameworks.
  • Proven experience managing large multidisciplinary teams and complex service areas.
  • Demonstrated success in service improvement and transformation programmes.
  • Strong experience working within multi-agency safeguarding partnerships.
  • Relevant professional qualification (e.g., Social Work qualification with registration or equivalent leadership experience).
  • Excellent strategic leadership, stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working at Director or Assistant Director level within a local authority.
  • Experience supporting inspection readiness and safeguarding improvement programmes.
  • Experience working within integrated health and social care systems.
