Job Responsibilities
As a Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, delivery, and installation of critical mechanical systems, including high‑pressure piping, within a nuclear power plant environment. You will ensure compliance with engineering standards, support system commissioning, and provide technical leadership to resolve site challenges while prioritizing the integration and performance of piping systems.
Dimensions
- Team size: Coordination with a team of 10 engineers and technicians, with potential expansion as the project evolves, including specialists in piping systems.
- Budget responsibilities: Oversight of contracts worth £100M, ensuring cost‑efficient and timely delivery of mechanical and piping systems.
- Systems involved: Critical cooling, ventilation, and high‑pressure piping systems specific to nuclear power operations.
Principal Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Review and validate detailed engineering designs for mechanical systems, with a specific focus on piping systems to ensure compliance with nuclear safety and quality standards (RCC‑M, ASME).
- Provide expertise in resolving technical challenges related to piping installation, such as welding deviations, material selection, and routing optimization.
- Collaborate with design teams to address system modifications and ensure constructability.
Delivery Oversight
- Supervise contractors responsible for piping prefabrication, welding, and on‑site installation, ensuring alignment with project schedules and construction priorities.
- Oversee and coordinate Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) and Hydro‑pressure Testing (HPT) activities for high‑pressure piping systems.
- Monitor and validate the performance of critical piping systems to ensure readiness for commissioning.
Quality and Documentation
- Validate engineering and quality assurance documentation related to piping systems, ensuring proper traceability and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Compile and hand over all necessary documentation to commissioning teams, ensuring all evidence is complete for system acceptance.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Act as the primary point of contact for piping contractors, project management teams, and commissioning leads to ensure seamless communication and project progress.
- Identify and mitigate risks related to piping systems, while providing regular reporting and updates to stakeholders.
The Ideal Candidate
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering roles, with demonstrated expertise in piping systems within nuclear or similarly regulated industries.
