Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to join a high-performing payroll function within a values-driven organisation. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering accurate, compliant, and timely payroll while working closely with HR, Finance, and key stakeholders. This position offers the opportunity to manage complex payroll operations, support audit and governance requirements, and contribute to ongoing process improvement and systems optimisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and review end-to-end payroll across multiple pay frequencies, including monthly and weekly payrolls.
  • Ensure accurate calculation of salaries, overtime, bonuses, statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP), and deductions.
  • Manage payroll for complex employee scenarios, including expatriates, secondments, irregular working patterns, and share schemes.

Compliance & Statutory Reporting

  • Ensure full compliance with payroll legislation, including Income Tax, National Insurance, RTI submissions, and pension auto-enrolment.
  • Prepare and submit year-end payroll documentation, including P60s, P11Ds, and statutory equivalents.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll regulations and implement legislative changes.

Audit, Controls & Governance

  • Support internal and external payroll audits.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between payroll, HR, and finance systems.
  • Ensure payroll activity complies with established governance, control, and risk frameworks.

Systems & Continuous Improvement

  • Use payroll systems to manage daily payroll operations efficiently.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with HR and Finance teams to ensure data integrity and aligned workflows.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in a Payroll Specialist or Senior Payroll role.
  • Strong understanding of payroll and HR processes, including GDPR and data protection.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced or change-driven environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and make informed recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a consistent focus on accuracy and compliance.
  • Ability to manage complexity and organisational change effectively.
