We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Principal Transport Planner to join our dynamic team in Edinburgh. This role combines both Transport Planning and Transport Engineering expertise, and offers a unique opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects within a growing and diverse city. You will play a key role in shaping the future of transport infrastructure, working closely with local authorities, developers, and stakeholders to deliver innovative, sustainable, and efficient transport solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transport Planning: Lead and manage the development of transport strategies and policies for both public and private sector clients. Provide technical expertise and guidance on transport planning studies, including traffic flow analysis, public transport planning, and travel demand forecasting. Prepare and review transport assessments, travel plans, and impact assessments to ensure compliance with local and national policies and regulations. Develop and evaluate transport models to inform decision-making and ensure the delivery of sustainable transport solutions. Advise on planning applications, transport infrastructure proposals, and development schemes from a transport planning perspective. Work on the design, specification, and implementation of transportation engineering solutions, including road networks, junctions, traffic management systems, and public transport infrastructure. Collaborate with engineers and other technical teams to ensure seamless integration between transport planning and engineering solutions. Conduct feasibility studies and provide engineering solutions for traffic management and transport schemes. Ensure that all engineering solutions meet safety standards, sustainability goals, and regulatory requirements.
  • Project Leadership and Client Management: Manage transport planning and engineering projects from inception through to delivery, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and local authorities. Provide leadership and mentorship to junior planners and engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
  • Strategic Development: Contribute to the development of the transport planning and engineering practice within the company, helping to expand service offerings and deliver innovative solutions. Stay up to date with the latest developments in transport planning and engineering, including new technologies, trends, and best practices.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field (chartered status or working towards it is desirable).
  • At least 5 years of experience in transport planning and engineering, with a focus on both the planning and technical aspects.
  • Strong knowledge of transport policy, legislation, and regulations.
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing transport assessments and studies, travel plans, and traffic engineering solutions.
  • Proficiency in transport planning software and tools (e.g., LinSig, VISSIM, SATURN, Paramics).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of Edinburgh’s transport networks, policies, and challenges.
  • Experience in working on large-scale urban transport projects.
  • A strong understanding of sustainable transport practices and climate change-related policies.
  • A proven track record in managing projects and leading teams.
