Overview
The Bookkeeper/Accounts Administrator is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting day-to-day accounting operations, and ensuring the smooth running of purchase and sales ledger activities. The role supports management with reliable financial information and contributes to the overall financial control of the business.
Responsibilities
- Bookkeeping & Financial Administration
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
- Support sales ledger, purchase ledger, including invoicing and credit control support
- Reconcile bank accounts and company credit cards
- Post journals and maintain nominal ledger entries
- Assist with month-end and year-end procedures
- Expenses Support
- Liaise with payroll department where applicable
- Supplier Management
- Set up and maintain supplier and customer accounts
- Support invoice and payment queries professionally
- Monitor outstanding balances and assist with debt management
- Support supplier statement reconciliations
- Compliance & Record Keeping
- Ensure financial records comply with company procedures and HMRC requirements
- Maintain accurate filing systems (digital and physical)
- Assist with VAT returns and supporting documentation
- Support audits and external accountant requests
- Provide financial information to management when required
- Support the wider operations team as needed
- Assist with improving financial processes and controls
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a bookkeeping or accounts administration role
- Strong working knowledge of accounting software (e.g. Xero, Sage, QuickBooks)
- Good understanding of purchase ledger and sales ledger processes
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Confident using Microsoft Excel and accounting systems
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Desirable
- AAT qualification or working towards (Level 2β4)
- Experience in a construction, trade, or service-based business
- Payroll and VAT experience
- Understanding of credit control processes
