Do you want to work full time in video but have no industry experience yet? Do you want to tell stories about ordinary people, the climate crisis, the cost of living and the state of our world?
We want someone who already knows why some videos travel and others die, who cares about making the country fairer, and who has probably already tried to do something about it on their own, whether that's running a channel, building a page, starting a podcast or doing something unexpected that nobody asked them to do.
If, like us, you've been making things in your bedroom that get more views than the outlets you'd like to work for, we want to hear from you. Your CV matters a lot less to us than what you've made and what you learned from it.
What we're doing
The Accelerator Unit exists because progressive ideas that most people actually agree with keep losing the attention war to a right-wing media machine that publishes more, moves faster and understands the platforms better. We think that's fixable. We help mission-driven organisations, think tanks and outlets build video operations that reach people well beyond their usual audience, and we're building our own original output alongside that work.
What you'd actually do
You'll be working on video for our clients as well as creating our original output. You'll work on the Unit's daily output as directed as well as go out and get original stories yourself, across themes of public ownership, wealth taxes, cost of living and corruption, amongst others, before everyone else has, working out the angle that will make a normal person care about it, and then getting it made: shooting, editing, writing the title and thumbnail, cutting it down for every platform it needs to be on, and watching closely what happens once it's out.
You'll also help with whatever it takes to run a small, growing company, from booking guests and kit to keeping the archive in order. Nobody here only does one thing, and that includes the people running it.
The job is based in our office, in Barbican, London, because the best ideas tend to come from people sitting next to each other arguing about what's working.
Who we're looking for
You understand virality as a craft rather than luck. You can look at something that blew up and explain why, and you've probably made a few things that did and a lot more that didn't. You know the difference between what works on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, and you read your analytics because you want to, not because someone told you to.
You care about the mission. You don't need to agree with us on everything, but you should want to see a fairer economy and a politics that serves ordinary people, and you should be frustrated that the people arguing for that keep getting outplayed online.
You've done something on your own. Maybe you run a channel or a page, maybe you've built an audience as a creator, maybe you set up a meme account, a newsletter, a campaign or a small business that taught you more than any job did. We're particularly interested in people who want to be creators themselves, and we'd rather help you get there than pretend you'll want to stay behind the camera forever.
You can make the thing yourself. You don't need to be the best editor in the country, but you should be able to shoot and cut something good quickly, in Premiere or whatever you use, and you should be willing to learn the rest.
You take feedback well and give it back. The shows that work are made by people who push back, try something different the next day and keep iterating. We want someone who'll tell us when we're wrong.
What we don't care about
We don't mind whether you went to university, whether you've worked in a newsroom before, or whether you have the right names on your CV. Some of the best people we've worked with came from nowhere near the media industry, and the audience we're trying to reach mostly didn't go to university either. If you've taught yourself everything you know from watching other people's videos and making your own, that counts for more here than a media degree.
What's in it for you
You'll work alongside people who have built and run video operations at national broadcasters and big digital publishers, including channels that have pulled in tens of millions of views. You'll learn the whole thing, from editorial and production to audience development and the business and operations side of keeping a media company alive. If you want to become a creator, we'll help you develop your own voice and give you room to try it out on our channels.
