Joining our fast-paced finance Corporate Accountancy team, you’ll focus on our core financial accounting and reporting processes. You will also work on projects to deliver change and contribute to our strategic financial planning.

It will be no surprise that you’ll be experienced in finance, with a proven track record of providing professional financial advice in local government. You should be a qualified accountant with excellent leadership skills and behaviors, including leading with confidence and integrity.

This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. Based at City Hall, the team is currently working in a hybrid model of home and office based on business needs. On occasion, you may be required to work evenings to attend meetings. We offer flexible and agile working to promote a healthy work/life balance.

What you’ll be doing

  1. Responsible for corporate accounting (including preparation of our statutory accounts), budget monitoring, capital programme preparation and monitoring, financial systems development and the integrity of our financial systems and data.
  2. Advise the Council’s most senior officers and present reports to elected members.
  3. Interpret and explain complex legislative directives and guidelines, financial regulations, etc.
  4. Enhance the financial awareness and capability of the organization through the provision of support and training.
  5. Undertake project work, including acting as the lead person as appropriate.
  6. Review, develop and implement accounting systems and procedures.
  7. Provide input to the Council’s strategic planning process.

What You’ll Need

You’ll need to use your knowledge to ensure we meet our statutory and management accounting responsibilities. You’ll be an experienced, qualified accountant who has previously worked within a large organization, preferably in a local government setting. You must have an aptitude for finance systems and for managing and developing staff. You must also be able to provide high-level strategic advice in a clear, understandable manner.

You must be an organized individual who is able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with the ability to prioritize tasks, your own workload, and that of your direct report in order to meet set objectives and statutory/local timescales, targets, and deadlines.

This role will require a DBS check.
