About Academy Royale International
Academy Royale International (ARI) runs award-winning academic summer schools for students aged 10 to 18. Since 2004, more than 50,000 students from over 175 nations have studied with us, living and learning on campus at colleges of the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, and at Marlborough College.
Our students go deeper into subjects they love, from medicine, law and engineering to artificial intelligence, business and English language, in discussion-led classes with expert tutors. They leave with new friends from around the world, a clearer sense of where they are heading and the confidence to get there.
We hold the 2024 King's Award for Enterprise for International Trade and have won three Queen's Awards for Enterprise. We are accredited by the British Accreditation Council and the British Council, and hold a RoSPA Gold Award for student safety.
The role
Junior Deans lead the Counsellor team and make each day on campus run safely and well. You turn the programme schedule into well-briefed activities, excursions and events, and you are the first person Counsellors turn to for direction.
The role carries real responsibility for student welfare and safety, and the chance to give students from around the world an extraordinary experience at some of the world's most renowned academic institutions.
What you will do
- Lead the Counsellor team. Run the daily briefing and the handover to the late shift, allocate Counsellors to activities, and set the standard for dress, attitude and communication.
- Deliver the programme. Plan and run the Social, Events and Enrichment programmes and Study Support, know the two-week schedule and activity options, and answer students' questions about them.
- Run excursions. Brief the team, check timings, transport, tickets and meals, and make sure every trip has registers, first aid kits and the coach driver's contact details.
- Keep students safe. Complete risk assessments for every activity, event and excursion for Programme Director approval, oversee supervision, meal times and curfew, and respond calmly to emergencies.
- Follow up and report. Manage daily registers, follow up students who are unwell or missing from lessons, complete incident reports and report concerns promptly.
- Keep leadership informed. Report daily to the Programme Director or Assistant Programme Director, and hand activity and excursion receipts to the Programme Director.
- Work a shift rota. Morning, afternoon, evening and night shifts.
What you will bring
- Leadership that is clear and supportive: you delegate well, give constructive feedback and recognise good work.
- Calm, resilient judgement under pressure, and the flexibility to adapt when plans change.
- Thorough organisation and time management, with a habit of preparing well and staying informed.
- Strong situational awareness and a good understanding of risk.
- Practical, creative problem-solving.
- Clear, respectful communication with young people, colleagues and parents from many cultures.
- Enthusiasm for the programme and the energy to engage students in it.
- A clear commitment to safeguarding and to ARI's values.
Essential
- Experience of working with young people, for example in teaching, coaching, youth work, childcare or a summer school.
- A-levels or an equivalent qualification, including international qualifications, and at least one year of higher education or equivalent experience.
- Clear spoken English, because you will brief Counsellors, explain rules to students and respond quickly in safety situations.
- Aged 18 or over by the start of your first session, as the role involves supervising students under 18.
Desirable
- Experience of leading a team.
- Experience of planning activities, events or trips.
