This may include pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), anxiety, school avoidance, medical needs, or other barriers to education. You will deliver tailored, engaging and inclusive learning sessions, either in the pupil's home, community settings, libraries or other suitable learning environments. The role will involve building positive relationships, developing confidence, supporting academic progress and helping pupils re-engage with education at a pace that works for them. We are looking for tutors who are passionate about making a difference and who understand that every child has individual needs, strengths and aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver personalised one-to-one tuition based on each pupil's individual learning needs, abilities and educational targets.
  • Deliver core subjects, including English, Maths and Science, where appropriate to your qualifications and experience.
  • Support pupils with SEND, SEMH needs, anxiety, school avoidance and other additional needs.
  • Develop positive, trusting and supportive relationships with pupils.
  • Create a safe, nurturing, structured and encouraging learning environment.
  • Adapt teaching methods and resources to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Promote pupil engagement, confidence, independence and motivation.
  • Monitor, assess and record pupil progress, providing regular feedback.
  • Work towards agreed learning objectives, EHCP outcomes and individual education targets where applicable.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, carers, schools, local authorities and other professionals involved in the pupil's education.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation and social development.
  • Maintain accurate records of sessions, attendance, progress and any relevant concerns.
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all children and young people.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional boundaries and safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working with children and/or young people in an educational, tutoring, mentoring or support capacity.
  • A patient, empathetic and adaptable approach to teaching and learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils who may have experienced difficulties accessing education.
  • A flexible approach to meeting individual learning needs.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • The ability to work independently and manage your own teaching sessions.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children and young people to achieve their potential.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), PGCE or an equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Level 3 or above qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Childcare, Education or a related field.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEND, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia and associated learning difficulties.
  • Experience supporting children and young people with SEMH needs, anxiety or emotionally based school avoidance.
  • Experience delivering alternative provision, home tuition, EOTAS or one-to-one intervention.
  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum and differentiated teaching strategies.
  • Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs and individual learning plans.

Personal Attributes

  • The ideal candidate will be: Patient, understanding and compassionate.
  • Reliable, professional and trustworthy.
  • Creative and enthusiastic about learning.
  • Resilient and confident when working with challenging or complex needs.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances.
