Make a Real Difference - Inspire, Support and Empower Every Pupil!

Are you a passionate and dedicated teacher who wants to make a genuine difference in the lives of children with Special Educational Needs? Do you believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, communicate, develop and achieve, whatever their individual needs?

Academics are working with specialist SEN schools and Alternative Provision settings across Gloucestershire and are looking for enthusiastic, committed and creative SEN Teachers to join their teams. This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to work with pupils with complex and additional needs, delivering highly personalised learning experiences that support their communication, independence, confidence and development.

You will be working in a specialist environment where every pupil has individual strengths, interests and needs. You will have the opportunity to create engaging learning experiences, celebrate small steps of progress and make a lasting impact on each child's educational journey.

The Role

As an SEN Teacher, you will take responsibility for planning and delivering engaging, individualised lessons that meet the needs of pupils with a range of additional needs, including communication and interaction difficulties and complex learning needs. Working closely with Learning Partners, teaching assistants, parents and other professionals, you will create a positive, structured and inclusive learning environment where every pupil is supported to reach their potential.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering highly personalised lessons tailored to pupils' individual abilities, interests and developmental needs.
  • Teaching and adapting the EYFS curriculum where appropriate, including supporting pupils who are pre-verbal or have significant communication needs.
  • Supporting communication and interaction through approaches such as Makaton and other alternative communication methods.
  • Creating and implementing individualised timetables to provide structure, consistency and meaningful learning opportunities.
  • Developing and delivering structured TEACCH workstations and teaching approaches to encourage engagement, understanding and independence.
  • Understanding and incorporating pupils' Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) into everyday teaching and learning.
  • Monitoring, assessing and celebrating pupils' progress, recognising individual achievements and developmental milestones.
  • Leading and working collaboratively with Learning Partners and support staff within the classroom.
  • Building positive relationships with parents, carers and external professionals to ensure a consistent approach to each pupil's development.
  • Promoting pupils' wellbeing, safeguarding and safety at all times.

About You

We are looking for teachers who are passionate about inclusive education and understand that every pupil has the ability to learn and achieve when given the right support. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • A genuine passion for working with children and young people with SEN.
  • Experience working with pupils with complex needs, communication difficulties or learning disabilities, or a strong interest in developing within specialist education.
  • An understanding of personalised learning and adapting teaching to meet individual needs.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and classroom management skills.
  • The ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, families and colleagues.
  • A creative, patient and flexible approach to teaching.
  • The confidence to work collaboratively with support staff and other professionals.
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare.
  • Experience with Makaton, TEACCH approaches, PECS or other alternative communication strategies would be advantageous.

Why Work With Academics?

  • Rewarding opportunities: Make a meaningful difference to the lives and development of pupils with additional needs.
  • Specialist settings: Work within welcoming and supportive SEN schools and Alternative Provision settings across Gloucestershire.
  • Competitive pay: Opportunities aligned with experience, qualifications and the requirements of each placement.
  • Dedicated support: Work with a specialist education consultant who understands the local SEN sector.
  • Professional development: Develop your knowledge and experience of specialist teaching approaches and personalised learning.
  • Career progression: Explore both short-term and longer-term opportunities within specialist education.
