Special School Assistant
Primary SEN School, Southampton
We are recruiting on behalf of an \’Outstanding\’ Primary SEN School in Southampton who are looking to appoint an experienced and compassionate Special School Assistant to join them ASAP.
Job type: Full‑time, term‑time contract (Mon‑Fri 8.45am‑3.15pm). If you are looking for a permanent position, the school may consider a temporary‑to‑permanent arrangement, so please only apply if you are ultimately seeking a permanent role.
Key Responsibilities
- Support classes of up to 9 pupils with a class teacher and 3 Special School Assistants.
- Assist with 1:1 and small‑group support, feeding, and personal hygiene duties.
- Build positive relationships, motivate and encourage children with complex learning difficulties, including autism, speech and language disorders, and challenging behaviours.
- Act as a positive role model and provide compassionate, enthusiastic, reliable and resilient support.
Qualifications and Experience
- GCSE C or above in English and Maths, or level 2 Functional Skills English and Maths (must have).
- Experience working with children in a school setting.
- Familiarity with PECS, Makaton, or other communication supports is an advantage.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to supporting pupils with complex needs.
Additional Information
- The school caters for pupils aged 4‑11 with complex learning difficulties and all pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
- The premises include soft play rooms, multi‑sensory interactive rooms and a hydrotherapy pool.
