Are you a compassionate and dedicated Learning Support Assistant with experience supporting children with special educational needs? We are currently seeking an experienced SEND LSA to support a non‑verbal child with autism in a welcoming school environment in Chelmsford.

About the Role

As a SEND LSA, you will be working closely with a non‑verbal child with autism to support their learning and personal development. You will assist with communication, emotional regulation, and engaging them in classroom activities, ensuring they receive the tailored support they need to succeed. The ideal SEND LSA will have a calm, patient, and nurturing approach, with the ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support a child with non‑verbal autism in the classroom on a one‑to‑one basis.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of individual learning plans.
  • Support with communication strategies and help the child engage in learning activities.
  • Promote the child’s social, emotional, and personal development.
  • Work alongside the class teacher to ensure the child’s needs are met.
  • Encourage independence and assist with personal care as required.
  • Build positive relationships with the child, their family, and the school team.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children with autism and special educational needs.
  • Understanding of non‑verbal communication techniques (e.g., Makaton, PECS, etc.) is beneficial.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for supporting children with SEND.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to work.
  • Experience in a classroom environment is essential.
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent) are desirable.
