The Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) will work within a community-based homecare service, supporting adults and older adults with mental health needs, learning disabilities and autism. The post holder will provide direct care within individuals’ homes, supporting with personal care, daily living tasks, emotional wellbeing and the implementation of personalised care plans. The aim of the role is to promote safety, independence, dignity and quality of life, enabling individuals to remain within their homes for as long as possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, person‑centred care within service users' homes.
  • Assist with personal care including washing, dressing, toileting and mobility support.
  • Support with household tasks such as meal preparation, cleaning and medication prompts.
  • Encourage independence and participation in daily routines and meaningful activities.
  • Support adults and older adults with mental health challenges, communication needs and behaviour that may be distressing.
  • Build positive relationships with service users, families and care professionals.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, safeguarding responsibilities and escalation of concerns.
  • Accurately document care delivery and report changes in wellbeing or risk promptly.
  • Promote a safe environment within the home including infection control and safe moving & handling.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Empathy, patience and a respectful approach to care.
  • Experience or confidence supporting adults and older adults in a care or home setting.
  • Ability to work independently in the community as well as part of a wider team.
  • Willingness to travel between home visits where required.
  • Good communication skills and ability to maintain clear records.
  • Ability to support with personal care sensitively and professionally.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to behavioural or mental health needs.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in homecare or domiciliary care.
  • Knowledge of dementia, age‑related conditions and additional health needs.
  • Training or experience in autism and learning disability support.
  • Care Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
