The NHS is under immense pressure. Primary care teams are carrying more demand than ever, with limited time, capacity, and headroom. When systems fail, the cost is felt by clinicians and patients alike. At Abtrace, we believe proactive and preventative care is one of the most effective ways to protect both health outcomes and the people delivering care. Today we support over 500 primary care practices across the UK covering 4.5 million patients, helping teams identify risk earlier, act sooner, and manage care at scale without adding unnecessary burden.

We believe healthcare professionals deserve software that is not only reliable and safe, but modern, thoughtful, and well designed. Clarity, craft, and polish matter. They are part of how we reduce friction and earn trust in high-stakes work.

The role

You will join a cross-functional product squad focused on improving how primary care teams experience and use Abtrace in their daily work. The aim is to make the product not only reliable and effective but a meaningful partner in proactive, preventative care. You will be the design lead in a product trio, working closely with a Product Manager and an Engineering Squad Lead. Together, you will own a problem space end to end, from understanding where customers struggle to delivering improvements that measurably improve outcomes.

In practice, you will:

  • Lead design within your squad, shaping problems and navigating ambiguity.
  • Design and ship end-to-end improvements across core workflows.
  • Stay close to reality by observing clinicians and practice teams and working closely with onboarding and support.
  • Start with clear hypotheses, run small experiments, and learn from what users actually do.
  • Balance exploration with commitment, pushing beyond obvious solutions while respecting constraints.
  • Bring a strong sense of craft and polish, raising the quality and coherence of the product.
  • Advocate for usability, accessibility, and clarity as non-negotiable.
  • Work closely with engineers to find the least obstructive path to value and improve collaboration.
  • Contribute to shared patterns and standards that help the product scale.

Who you are

This role is for a senior, product-minded designer who cares deeply about outcomes, craft, and collaboration. You are likely to be a good fit if you:

  • Have led design within a cross-functional product squad and owned outcomes, not just outputs.
  • Are motivated by helping users succeed in complex clinical environments.
  • Care about making software that feels modern, thoughtful, and well made.
  • Think in systems and hypotheses, not just screens.
  • Are comfortable shipping, learning, and iterating.
  • Can explore widely, articulate trade‐offs clearly, and commit decisively.
  • Enjoy working closely with product managers and engineers as equal partners.
  • Are calm, pragmatic, and resilient in ambiguous situations.
  • Experience in healthcare or B2B SaaS is a bonus, but not required.

Who this role is not suitable for

This role is probably not a good fit if you:

  • Prefer working only in early discovery or concept phases.
  • Want narrowly defined responsibilities or low‐ambiguity environments.
  • Are primarily motivated by acquisition, marketing‐led growth, or brand work.
  • Optimise mainly for polish without grounding work in outcomes.
  • Avoid challenge or find it difficult to advocate for quality when it's uncomfortable.

Competitive salary, depending on experience. Private Pension. Generous maternity/paternity leave. Flexi working & possibility for remote working. Company's office in Paddington - easy commute and comfortable surroundings. Motivated, highly functioning, multi-disciplinary team. We'll equip you with laptop and any necessary gear. As much freedom and independence as you earn, and a chance to grow rapidly as the company does.
