Build Your Career Somewhere You’re Trusted, Challenged and Able to Grow. At Abstruct Consulting, we’re not looking for engineers who simply want to process calculations and move drawings from one stage to the next. We’re looking for engineers who enjoy thinking, solving problems and taking ownership.
The people who thrive here are those who:
- enjoy variety rather than repetitive project work
- want direct involvement with clients and design teams
- take pride in practical, elegant engineering solutions
- like being trusted with responsibility rather than heavily micromanaged
- want to continue developing technically and professionally
We’re a growing UK-based structural and civil engineering consultancy with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, practical and commercially sensible engineering solutions across a wide variety of sectors. Our projects span:
- hospitality and leisure
- commercial
- sports and recreation
- education
What makes the role enjoyable is the breadth of work and the level of involvement. One week you might be working on a bespoke residential project, the next a hospitality or commercial development, collaborating closely with architects, clients and the wider design team from early concept stages through to delivery. Because we’re a smaller, growing consultancy, people here have the opportunity to genuinely influence projects, contribute ideas and develop far more broadly than they often can in larger corporate environments.
This role would particularly suit someone who feels frustrated being:
- heavily siloed
- stuck on repetitive work
- removed from clients and decision-making
- treated as just another resource within a large organisation
At Abstruct, your contribution matters.
The Role
This is a hybrid role combining office and home-based working as part of a collaborative and experienced structural engineering team. You’ll take ownership of projects and work closely with colleagues, clients and consultants across a diverse range of sectors. The successful candidate will ideally have a solid grounding across the main structural design materials and enjoy being involved throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities include
- Producing structural design solutions from concept through to completion
- Preparing calculations in accordance with Eurocodes
- Designing in reinforced concrete, steel, masonry, timber and foundations
- Preparing technical reports and calculation packs
- Producing and reviewing PDF mark‑ups
- Liaising directly with clients, architects and the wider design team
- Attending meetings and site visits
- Contributing to collaborative problem solving within the team
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who combines technical competence with the right mindset and attitude. Ideally you will have:
- A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
- Around 4+ years’ experience
- A good understanding of current UK design and construction standards
- Experience using Tekla Tedds and/or TSDF
- Familiarity with REVU Bluebeam or similar PDF markup software
- Good communication and written English skills
- The ability to work collaboratively and take ownership of your work
- Experience with CDE collaboration platforms would also be advantageous.
Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who:
- enjoys solving engineering problems
- wants to keep learning and developing
- takes pride in delivering quality work
- values being part of a supportive team
What We Offer
At Abstruct, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- develop technically across a broad range of projects
- work closely with experienced engineers
- take increasing ownership and responsibility
- progress toward Chartership with full support
- contribute to a growing consultancy where your voice matters
Benefits include
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Continuous training and development
- Professional membership subscription
- Organised social events
- Long service award
- Pension
- Life Assurance
This Role Is Probably NOT For You If
- You prefer highly repetitive production‑style engineering work
- You want to remain heavily siloed within a large corporate structure
- You are uncomfortable taking ownership or client responsibility
- You prefer being told exactly what to do at every stage
Applicants must have the right to work in the UK, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. The role includes regular site visits, some in rural locations, so candidates must be able to travel independently. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are therefore essential.
