Hands-on Financial Controller role within a growing Oxford Publishing business, reporting directly to the Board. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-established Publishing business based in Oxford in a broad and highly visible Financial Controller role. This position will suit someone who enjoys owning the full Finance function from top to bottom and is equally comfortable operating strategically as they are rolling up their sleeves day to day. The business is looking for a hands-on and proactive Finance professional who wants to make the role their own, bring fresh ideas, improve processes and really put their stamp on the function. This is a hybrid role working in the office 3 days a week.
Key duties:
- Producing monthly management accounts including P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow reports, alongside month-end duties such as reconciliations, accruals and prepayments.
- Managing cash flow, including forecasting, liquidity monitoring, international payments and internet banking.
- Driving internal controls and process improvements, while providing financial insights to support business decision making.
- Preparing VAT returns and ensuring ongoing tax compliance.
- Supervising the AR Administrator, reviewing ageing reports, maintaining accurate records and supporting effective debt collection.
- Overseeing Accounts Payable processes, including multi-currency payments and payroll preparation for external accountants.
- Producing detailed half-year sales analysis by territory, publisher and product.
- Preparing monthly sales reports for publishers and clients.
Key skills:
- Fully qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA or ACA).
- Proven experience in a similar hands-on Finance role with full management accounting responsibility.
- Strong experience across Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes, with a willingness to remain involved in day-to-day transactional finance.
- Advanced knowledge of accounting systems including Xero, alongside strong Excel skills.
- Experience using HubSpot or other CRM systems.
- Confident producing management accounts, cash flow forecasting and financial reporting.
- Strong process improvement skills, with the ability to streamline and enhance finance processes and controls.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across the business.
- Comfortable reporting directly into senior leadership and acting as the sole Finance representative within the business.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proactive, adaptable and solutions-focused approach.
