Above & Beyond is proud to be partnering with a supply-chain decarbonisation start-up, born out of the University of Cambridge to hire a Senior Software Engineer into their engineering team. Climate change is the defining business challenge of our time, and our client is here to solve it. Most decarbonisation solutions count emissions but do nothing to reduce them, but this company helps organisations that have complex supply chains and production processes to turn their emissions data into actionable, operational insights. These insights help companies to take clear steps to decarbonise, as well as cut costs, sharpen decisions, and unlock genuine competitive advantage. The team is fast-moving and they value EQ just as much as IQ. Their team culture is centered around autonomy, high-ownership, speed and no-ego collaboration, and they seek people who care deeply and are eager to work on solving problems bigger than themselves.

The Role

As a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer and key member of the engineering team, you’ll be shipping great software, bringing strong engineering judgment, and making the team better through craft and collaboration. You’ll ship across the full stack, crafting clean React UIs, building reliable Node.js and Python services, and deploying to AWS. You’ll own features end-to-end alongside a small, strong engineering team, and you’ll have real influence over how the product evolves. You also use AI coding tools and agentic workflows as a force-multiplier, and you’re actively curious about how they change what a small engineering team can achieve. This position operates on a hybrid work model with 3 days per week in our Cambridge office. Remote arrangements may be considered for outstanding candidates.

The Work You’ll Do

  • Technical Leadership
    • Build responsive, modular UIs in React and TypeScript that make complex emissions data feel simple and intuitive.
    • Develop and maintain backend services in Node.js, designing clean APIs and working with cloud-native AWS infrastructure.
    • Ship features end-to-end: from picking up a product brief to deploying to production via our CI/CD pipelines.
    • Contribute to the technical direction of the team, helping inform architectural decisions that balance speed, quality, and long-term scalability.
    • Champion AI-native development practices and agentic workflows across your own work and actively share that thinking with the wider team.
  • Team and Product
    • Partner closely with the wider team to translate product ambitions into well-scoped, well-sequenced engineering work.
    • Feed into the engineering roadmap, providing strong technical input on prioritisation, feature velocity, and technical health.
    • Contribute to hiring decisions and help shape an engineering culture that helps the business scale.
    • Communicate clearly about technical decisions and progress with product, design, and the wider team.

Requirements

The Minimum Qualifications You’ll Need

  • 7 or more years of professional software engineering experience.
  • A strong individual contributor deeply motivated to stay hands-on in the codebase, with a collaborative approach to sharing knowledge and raising quality across the team.
  • Deep proficiency across the full stack, including React and TypeScript on the front end and Node.js on the back end.
  • Solid experience with AWS infrastructure and cloud-native deployment.
  • A proven track record of shipping high-quality software at pace.
  • Real, daily use of AI coding tools and agentic development workflows as a core part of how you work.
  • Strong communication and the ability to build trust quickly across engineering, product, and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience at an early-stage startup as a senior individual contributor.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL, Terraform, or CI/CD pipeline design.
  • Experience integrating LLMs or building AI-powered product features.
  • Exposure to climate, sustainability, or deep-tech domains.
  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field (not required, track record speaks louder).

Benefits & What We Offer

  • Compensations & Benefits:
    • Competitive pay dependent on your skills, qualifications and experience.
    • Year-end performance bonus.
    • 25 days annual leave.
    • Competitive stock option plan. We want you to think and benefit like an owner as the company grows.
    • Company pension with NEST.
    • Leading private health insurance with WPA (the only Which? Recommended Provider for Private Medical Insurance).
    • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Work Environment:
    • A hybrid work model that fosters both teamwork and individual flexibility.
    • Remote working allowance (2 weeks per year).
    • Work from our HQ in Cambridge at one of Europe's leading startup hubs.
    • Great on-site amenities (unlimited free coffee, monthly events with global sustainability leaders).
  • Culture & Growth:
    • A flat, fast-growing team (200%+ YoY growth) from diverse backgrounds that recently closed a $5M seed round.
    • An open-minded culture with a flat hierarchy and everyone vectoring in the same direction and where ideas and ownership matter.
    • The chance to work alongside world-class climate scientists and engineers on one of the most important problems of our time.
