About Abode

Abode Architects is a boutique, design-led residential practice based in Glasgow city centre. We specialise in high-quality private homes across the Central Belt, including considered extensions, townhouse renovations, careful refurbishments, listed buildings, conservation-area projects and low-energy new builds. The studio is intentionally small. Craft, clarity, client care and good communication matter. We are growing carefully and are looking for a Project Architect who can take ownership of projects, help move work forward, and play a key role in the next stage of the practice.

The role

We are looking for a Project Architect to take ownership of residential projects across design, planning, building warrant and selected construction stages. This is a hands-on role in a small studio. You will be involved in design, technical development, consultant coordination, client communication, drawing package delivery and site-stage support. The right person will be organised, practical, design-sensitive and confident enough to move projects forward without needing every decision made for them.

What you will do

  • Lead day-to-day progress on selected residential projects
  • Develop design proposals into clear planning and building warrant packages
  • Prepare coordinated drawings, schedules and supporting information
  • Attend client meetings, site visits and design reviews
  • Coordinate consultants, track actions and close out information
  • Respond to planning, warrant and technical queries
  • Help ensure design intent, detailing and quality standards are carried through on site
  • Contribute to improving studio systems as the practice grows

How we work

  • Based in Glasgow city centre, with hybrid working by agreement
  • 35-hour working week, with overtime avoided where possible
  • Mostly private residential clients, including homeowners and small developers
  • Regular 1:1s, clear expectations and structured development
  • A focus on continuous improvement, better systems and high-quality client service
  • Frequent visits to client homes and project sites across the Central Belt
  • A driving licence is strongly preferred due to the nature of the work.

You will fit if

  • You are ARB registered, ideally with 2+ years post-registration experience
  • You have strong experience working on residential projects in Scotland
  • You have solid experience preparing Building Warrant packages in Scotland
  • You have a good working knowledge of Scottish Planning processes
  • You are comfortable attending site, speaking with contractors and helping resolve practical issues
  • You are confident communicating with clients, consultants and contractors
  • You are organised, proactive and comfortable taking responsibility
  • You care about design quality, construction detail and practical delivery
  • You understand that good work needs to be delivered within agreed fees and timescales
  • You are comfortable working in a small studio where initiative matters

Strongly preferred

  • Experience with listed buildings, historic buildings or conservation areas
  • Experience with domestic alterations, extensions and refurbishments
  • Revit experience, ideally at least 1 year on live projects
  • Experience with traditional procurement or site-stage support
  • Ability to produce or contribute to 3D visuals

Software

  • Essential or useful experience includes:
  • Revit
  • AutoCAD
  • SketchUp
  • Photoshop
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel

Useful but not essential: We do not expect every candidate to be expert in every package. Revit experience is preferred, but the right attitude, judgement and project ownership are more important.

Package

  • Salary of £35,000 - £45,000 depending on experience
  • Performance-based annual bonus
  • 30 days total leave each year
  • Structured CPD and development support
  • Hybrid working by agreement
