LOCATION: GYLE SHOPPING CENTRE, Edinburgh

SHIFT PATTERN: VARIOUS SHIFT PATTERN 5 OVER 7, 38 hours per week

PAY RATE: £14.55 per hour

ROLE OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE

The Cleaning Team Leader is responsible for the day‑to‑day coordination and delivery of cleaning services across The Gyle, covering both internal and external areas of the estate. The role provides front‑line supervision and control of cleaning activity, ensuring standards of cleanliness, safety and presentation are consistently achieved. The postholder will lead by example, support operatives during shifts, and ensure tasks are completed in line with specifications and site priorities. This is a hands‑on role, combining day‑to‑day cleaning duties with responsibility for coordinating tasks, maintaining standards and supporting operatives throughout the shift.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out cleaning duties across internal and external areas, including public areas, washrooms, back‑of‑house areas, service yards and external spaces.
  • Lead cleaning operatives on shift, working alongside the team to deliver required standards.
  • Allocate daily tasks, set priorities and adjust workloads as site conditions change.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and presentation at all times.
  • Carry out routine checks and spot inspections, addressing issues immediately.
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed in line with Health & Safety and COSHH requirements.
  • Use cleaning equipment and chemicals correctly and safely.
  • Monitor stock levels of consumables and report shortages.
  • Report defects, damage, hazards or equipment faults promptly to the Duty Manager.
  • Support deep cleans, reactive cleaning and event‑related requirements.
  • Assist with the induction and on‑the‑job training of cleaning operatives.
  • Complete cleaning records, checklists and any required documentation accurately.
  • Promote professional behaviour, teamwork and pride in the site.
  • Escalate issues to the Duty Manager where standards or resources are at risk.
  • Undertake any reasonable duties necessary to support the effective operation of the Centre.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience working in a cleaning role, with experience acting as a Working Team Leader or Lead Cleaner.
  • Practical knowledge of both internal and external cleaning operations.
  • Good understanding of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety and COSHH requirements.
  • Ability to organise tasks, guide others and lead by example.
  • Comfortable working in a public, high‑footfall environment.
  • Good communication skills and a practical, solution‑focused approach.
  • Reliable, proactive and standards‑driven.
  • Desirable BICSc qualification or working knowledge of BICSc standards.
  • Experience working in a shopping centre, retail or mixed‑use environment.
