Abingdon School is seeking a Senior School Nurse to join the team. Please make sure you read the following details carefully before making any applications.

Location: Park Road, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, OX14 1DE

Job Type: Part Time, Term Time

Working Hours: 35 hours per week. Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm with a 30 minutes unpaid lunch break

Salary: £33,922.81 to £37,617.73 based on an FTE of 0.6813 per annum

About Us: The Foundation comprises two schools: Abingdon School and Abingdon Prep School, as well as Abingdon School Enterprises. Abingdon School is a leading independent day and boarding school with more than 1,000 pupils aged 11-18. Currently a boys school, it will become co-educational from September 2026. Abingdon Prep School is a vibrant and warm day preparatory school with around 200 pupils aged 4-13 which has been co-educational since last year. Both Schools are situated in beautiful and extensive grounds, with the senior school in the heart of Abingdon on Thames, just south of Oxford, and the Prep School located a few miles away in nearby Frilford.

The Role: We are seeking a capable, flexible and proactive qualified Senior Nurse to join our small and friendly team in the Health Centre to provide care for pupils during term time. The Senior School Nurse oversees the management and operation of the schools Health Centre. The Health Centre plays a vital role in the medical, physical and emotional well-being of pupils. The role is expected to work in partnership with pupils, parents, School personnel, GPs and other appropriate agencies to carry out health surveillance, health promotions and other public health initiatives required by the School.

  • Provide high-quality medical and mental health care, supporting pupil wellbeing and recovery
  • Assess and manage health needs, including checks, immunisations, and liaison with parents and services
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure infection control and safe handling of medical supplies
  • Oversee daily Health Centre operations, including staffing, resources, and emergency provision
  • Uphold professional standards, confidentiality, and continuous development
  • Support safeguarding, health education, and medical cover for school activities

You: Registered General Nurse (RGN) in adult or child nursing, with a minimum of 5 years post-registration experience and evidence of ongoing CPD and revalidation compliance. Able to work independently without on-site medical backup, maintaining professionalism in a physically demanding environment. Strong understanding of school protocols, safeguarding, and child protection, with a clear commitment to compliance and student welfare. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, staff, and parents both verbally and in writing. Skilled in prioritising workloads, adapting to changing situations, and responding calmly and confidently to accidents and first aid needs. Team-oriented, approachable, and professional, with good IT skills and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
