We are currently supporting a consultancy on the appointment of an experienced Employment Lawyer to join a major public sector transformation programme. The successful candidate will join a small in-house employment law team supporting a wider organisational HR transformation project. A key focus of the role will be assisting with the management and resolution of a backlog of complex employment matters arising from historic policy issues currently being addressed through the transformation programme. This is a varied and hands-on role, requiring someone who is comfortable managing their own caseload independently with minimal supervision.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing contentious and non-contentious employment matters
  • Handling complex internal disputes and sensitive investigations
  • Advising on disciplinaries, grievances and discrimination matters
  • Supporting restructures and transfers
  • Drafting and advising on settlement agreements and contractual matters
  • Working alongside external lawyers on Employment Tribunal claims
  • Providing pragmatic employment law and policy advice across the organisation

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong public sector employment law experience, ideally gained within central government or the civil service
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload independently and efficiently
  • Excellent judgement and problem-solving capability
  • A pragmatic and commercially minded approach
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
  • Confidence engaging with senior lawyers and stakeholders across the organisation

Previous in-house experience would be highly beneficial, although candidates from private practice with relevant public sector experience will also be considered. This role would suit someone who is adaptable, calm under pressure and able to navigate complex and sensitive issues with professionalism and confidence.
