Abingdon House School is an independent day school for children aged 5-19 with special educational needs including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and associated social communication profiles. We deliver a mainstream‑style environment with a fully integrated programme of education, therapy and personal development. About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative and forward‑thinking team in a vibrant SEN school. In the Prep school, students follow the national curriculum adapted to individual needs. All SEN teachers at AHS deliver lessons with embedded therapeutic approaches. This is achieved through therapy that is integrated into every aspect of the school day, in lessons, structured daily routines and through interactions between staff and students. Teaching staff receive regular CPD and work closely with our therapy team to ensure therapeutic strategies are consistently and confidently applied.

Professional Duties

  • Abiding by the policies and procedures of AHS and Cavendish Education.
  • Promoting and upholding the ethos and values of AHS and Cavendish Education.
  • General duties may alter in line with the needs of the school, as directed by the Headteacher or delegated member of staff.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for a group of students, giving these students particular guidance and promoting their progress and well‑being.
  • Develop and adapt the curriculum and deploy teaching techniques to stimulate and meet the students' individual Special Educational Needs (SEN) and support the students in developing academic, personal and life skills.
  • Planning, preparing, delivering and evaluating educational programmes of support for students that are appropriately individualised and differentiated to support their SEN.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of students, both academic and personal development. This includes implementing the Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Working collaboratively with other members of staff to maintain a coherent approach to the teaching of students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) throughout the School.
  • Liaising and working closely with external professionals such as Local Authorities, Therapists, Educational Psychologists, as required to meet the individual needs of the students.
  • Ensuring that the individual student in the class is supported and encouraged during unstructured periods of the school day such as break and meal‑times to develop independence, foster responsible and considerate behaviour, and generalise the skills taught in therapy and teaching sessions.
  • Preparing information for and attending staff meetings, case meetings, Annual Reviews and meetings with parents and external professionals to discuss the progress of the student and promote the School.
  • Preparing reports on student abilities and attending parent meetings in line with the school reporting cycle to identify students' needs.
  • Maintaining standards of care and discipline in the school and during school activities, in line with all school policies and supporting the ethos of the school.
  • Working with the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and other staff on the preparation and development of courses of study, resource materials, intervention programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Developing planning, evaluation and assessment procedures, in line with school policy, to evaluate students' progress.

Appraisal

  • Participating in any arrangements for appraisal and professional feedback and development.

Further Training and Staff Development

  • Keeping up to date with new developments in education and with regards to SEN teaching.
  • Participating in further training and professional development.
  • Participating in and leading staff training after attending individual training courses.
  • Attending all inset training at the school (twilight sessions and inset days).

Supervision

  • Performing normal staff duties, including those specified in the Staff Handbook.
  • Providing reasonable cover for absent colleagues.
  • Undertaking break, lunchtime and after school duties as required.
