The role
You will be required to undertake general cleaning duties under the direction of the Manager or his/her nominee.
What you’ll do
Under the direction of the Manager or his/her nominee, you will assist in:
- Providing a high quality cleaning service within all designated areas (and immediately outside these areas), whilst ensuring a clean and hygienic condition, as directed and to the required standard; (i) Prioritise own work and work around users of the building and ensure that areas which are used first are cleaned as priority; (ii) Clean specified areas using the appropriate techniques, materials and equipment; (iii) Carry out a thorough deep clean of specified areas according to business needs; (iv) Maintain adequate stocks of cleaning chemicals and materials in store cupboard; (v) Removal of refuse to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- To comply with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements, including but not limited to: (i) Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH); (ii) Health and Safety; (iii) Data Protection; (iv) Equal Opportunities Legislation.
- Be responsible for securing of areas during and after cleaning e.g. ensuring windows which have been open are then closed and appropriate doors are locked.
- Accompanying Manager or his/her nominee on inspections.
- Reporting any equipment failures or damaged equipment and potential hazards to the Line Manager.
- Assisting with fire evacuation in residences whilst on duty.
- Reporting of maintenance requirements within area of responsibility.
- Answer queries from staff and visitors in the building.
- Attend team meetings.
- Undertake all training courses as necessary to carry out duties.
- Basic IT skills would be desirable for this position, to allow the postholder the ability to navigate the University website, e-mail and to access their Aber People staff account (to book annual leave and to access payslips).
- This position is physically demanding and involves lifting and carrying, occasionally up and down stairs, moving furniture, lifting bed linen and carrying cleaning products and equipment.
- To carry out reasonable duties as requested by the Management Team.
- You will be required to work within any University Building.
- Willingness to participate in covering additional hours from time-to-time, in addition to working evening shifts, as and when required, in line with business need.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
- Willingness to attend any of the training courses detailed in the desirable column under the Qualifications criteria.
- Previous cleaning experience.
- Good face to face communication skills in order to receive, understand and convey straightforward information. An ability to answer queries from staff and visitors in the building with excellent customer service skills.
- Willingness to learn basic IT skills.
- The ability to work in an organised manner.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- The ability to work unsupervised.
- Flexible working attitude, willingness to learn about the requirements of the University (especially Campus Services) and ability to follow instructions.
- The position is physically demanding as the post involves lifting bed linen and carrying cleaning products and equipment; therefore it is essential that the successful applicant has an appropriate level of health and fitness.
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A0. An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.

- First Aid Training.
- Manual Handling Training.
- COSHH training or knowledge of how to use cleaning chemicals correctly.
- Basic Health & Safety Training.
- Customer service qualification.
- Experience of working within the Higher Education Sector.
- Basic IT skills with the ability to use the Internet and e-mail.
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A1.
