We strive to make Aberdeen a great place to work so that we can attract and retain the industry’s best talent. Our people put our stakeholders at the heart of everything they do by helping us to make a positive difference to the lives of our clients, customers, colleagues, shareholders, and society. We are focused on growing our direct and advised wealth platforms and repositioning our specialist asset management business to meet client demand. We are committed to providing excellent client service, supported by leading technology and talent.
Our Technology function provides the secure, reliable and scalable platforms that keep Aberdeen connected to our clients, markets and one another. The network engineering team designs, runs and improves our enterprise network services across our offices, data centres and cloud environments, ensuring that critical applications and data are always available and protected. Working closely with our Cloud, Security and Platform teams, we focus on strong security, high performance and modern ways of working to support a highly regulated, global investment business. By delivering robust connectivity and secure access, the team plays a key role in enabling our clients to be better investors.
As a Senior Network Engineer in our UK Technology function, you will take ownership of the design, operation and optimisation of Aberdeen’s enterprise network across on-premises and Microsoft Azure cloud environments. Based in Edinburgh or London and working in a hybrid model (3 days per week in the office), you will act as a senior escalation point for complex incidents and lead on the delivery of secure, high performing network services, for both BAU and project work. You will work extensively with technologies such as Checkpoint firewalls, Cisco enterprise routing and switching, and Azure networking services in the cloud. This senior role is an opportunity to shape our network roadmap, influence security and connectivity standards and work closely with colleagues across Cloud, Security and Platform teams. This is a permanent position that will give you the scope to deepen your technical expertise, lead on significant change and invest in your tomorrow while helping us to invest for a better future for our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 3rd line support for complex network incidents and problems, acting as a senior escalation point to restore stable service across data centres, campuses and branch offices.
- Design, operate and optimise enterprise network services across on premises and Azure environments, proactively monitoring performance, capacity and availability and driving improvements where required.
- Administer, optimise and troubleshoot Checkpoint firewalls, including policy management, clustering, VPNs and advanced security features, to maintain a strong and compliant security posture.
- Engineer and support Cisco LAN and WAN infrastructure, implementing advanced routing, resilient switching architectures and quality of service to support business critical traffic.
- Design and support Azure networking, including virtual networks, network security groups, routing, VPN gateways, ExpressRoute and hybrid cloud connectivity models, working closely with Cloud and Security teams.
- Lead major incidents and complex change activity, ensuring adherence to change management and audit requirements, maintaining accurate documentation and sharing knowledge with colleagues.
About The Candidate
To be successful in this role you will bring:
- Strong hands-on experience with Cisco enterprise routing and switching, including protocols such as BGP and OSPF, as well as high availability and quality of service designs.
- A deep understanding of Azure networking concepts such as virtual networks, ExpressRoute, virtual WAN, Azure Firewall and secure network segmentation in the cloud.
- Expert knowledge of Checkpoint firewalls, including policy design, clustering, VPNs and threat prevention, and experience of running them in complex environments.
- A solid grounding in core network technologies including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, MPLS and SD WAN, along with experience using monitoring and logging tools.
- Proven ability to operate in complex, regulated environments, taking ownership of major incidents, collaborating across teams and producing clear technical documentation, both on-premises and in cloud network environments.
- A collaborative approach and an interest in mentoring and supporting colleagues, sharing knowledge and contributing to continuous improvement of network services.
It Would Also Be Great If You Have
- Checkpoint certifications such as CCSA or CCSE.
- Cisco certification at CCNP level.
- Microsoft Azure Network Engineer Associate certification or similar cloud networking accreditation.
- Experience with additional firewall vendors such as Palo Alto or Fortinet and familiarity with scripting or Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools such as Terraform.
