Our people put our stakeholders at the heart of everything they do by helping us to make a positive difference to the lives of our clients, customers, colleagues, shareholders and society. We are focused on growing our direct and advised wealth platforms and repositioning our specialist asset management business to meet client demand. We are committed to providing excellent client service, supported by leading technology and talent.

Aberdeen comprises three businesses, interactive investor (ii), Investments and Adviser, each of which focuses on meeting and adapting to our clients’ evolving needs:

  • interactive investor, the UK’s second largest direct-to-consumer investment platform, enables individuals in the UK to plan, save and invest in the way that works for them.

  • Our Adviser business provides financial planning solutions and technology for UK financial advisers, enabling them to create value for their customers.

  • Our Investments business is a specialist asset manager that focuses on areas where we have both strength and scale to capitalise on the key themes shaping the market, through either public markets or alternative asset classes.

About the role

As a Quality Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring that quality is embedded throughout the software development lifecycle. Reporting to the Quality Engineering Chapter Lead, you will work closely with engineers, product managers, and designers to champion a quality-first mindset, ensuring our products meet the highest standards of reliability, usability, and performance.

This role is a blend of quality assurance and quality coaching, where you will not only test software but also mentor developers on best practices, define test strategies, and advocate for testing from the customer’s perspective. You will drive both manual and automated testing approaches, selecting the best tools for the job in a polyglot environment.

In this role you will be able to make a real impact by ensuring our products are high-quality, user-friendly, and resilient. You will be working with modern testing approaches, including automation, performance testing, and CI/CD-driven quality strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute both automated and manual tests, ensuring software meets functional and non-functional requirements.

  • Collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and designers to ensure quality is built in from the start.

  • Guide teams in test planning and execution, ensuring coverage for performance, security, accessibility, and usability.

  • Foster a quality-first mindset, mentoring engineers on best practices in testing, CI/CD, and automation.

  • Develop and maintain automated test suites, integrating them into CI/CD pipelines to accelerate feedback loops.

  • Perform exploratory testing to uncover edge cases and usability concerns, ensuring the best customer experience.

  • Advocate for service reliability and real-world testing scenarios, considering performance under load, failover conditions, and system resilience.

  • Write clear and reproducible defect reports and contribute to technical documentation.

  • Take a polyglot approach to testing tools, selecting the best frameworks for different tech stacks and projects.

  • Continuously improve QA processes, sharing knowledge with the wider team and driving quality initiatives.

About the candidate

  • Experience in manual and automated testing, with an understanding of when to apply each.

  • Knowledge of testing frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Jest, JUnit, Postman, or similar).

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and CI/CD pipelines for automated testing.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think like a customer, ensuring usability and accessibility.

  • Experience working in agile environments, embedding testing within cross-functional teams.

  • A proactive mindset, always looking for ways to improve quality and streamline testing processes.

  • Strong collaboration and coaching skills, with the ability to mentor engineers on best practices in quality.

How to prepare for a job interview at aberdeen

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If aberdeen uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
