Clinical Endoscopist, Trainee Annex 21

We are looking to employ 2 new Trainee Clinical Endoscopists under the Annexe 21 route. The successful applicant will be expected to attend Glasgow Caledonian University Advanced Clinical Nurse Post Graduate (PgD) pathway which will commence in January 2026. This is a two year course that covers non-medical prescribing education and NMC indexing, advanced clinical assessment skills, research knowledge and skills, and theoretical and applied non-medical endoscopy skills. The course will involve travel to Glasgow to attend in-person lectures as well as online learning and self-directed study.

During this time, trainees will simultaneously develop their skills in practice using the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) endoscopy training e-portfolio. Their development will be supervised by either Senior Clinical Endoscopists or Consultant Endoscopists. The successful candidate will have access to dedicated training lists, protected study time and opportunities within the clinical setting for learning. You will also attend a JAG accredited basic skills course for your chosen modality (OGD or colonoscopy) which travel will be required for also.

To undertake the role of a trainee clinical endoscopist, the post holder will utilise specialist clinical knowledge and experience, obtained through their formal academic study and structured endoscopy mentorship programme to develop competence in diagnostic gastrointestinal endoscopy over a period of two years. Once on the course, the trainee will start to learn their practical endoscopy skills under close supervision. There is an e-portfolio that logs their number of procedures (JETs e-portfolio). They will perform 280 – 300 procedures prior to competency sign-off. Achieving competence is dependent on exposure to training lists, but is generally achieved in about a year for an OGD trainee and 12-18 months for colonoscopy.

The trainee will be able to assess patient literacy levels, monitor patient understanding, and appropriately obtain informed consent for endoscopic procedures and treatment. Can accurately explain the associated risks and complications, and make judgements on patient capacity, power of attorney, and religious requirements. The trainee will build upon information provided from referral sources to tailor an accurate pre-procedural patient assessment. Can identify presenting complaint, fitness for procedure/co-morbidity, and relevant medication history.

Trainees will show proficiency in communication with patients, directly at the point of diagnosis, providing post-procedural advice as required, promoting health, breaking bad news and providing practical advice/support for patients. Trainees will competently co-ordinate their own developing workload, including patient management- discharge/follow up, and MDT referral/liaison, where appropriate.

You will initially be employed under Annexe 21 training post and on successful completion of training after a two year period, the post holder will be awarded a Band 7 pay grade (Annexe 21 of a Band 7 is 70% of band 7 pay during training for the first year, 75% of band 7 year for second year of training).

Applicants must be a registered nurse, educated to degree level and have acute nursing experience in either medical or surgical discipline with knowledge of endoscopy and GI anatomy, physiology and disease process. Applicants must have a commitment to ongoing professional development.
